Using Professional Recruitment Services
Looking for a new job can be an exciting, but daunting prospect at the best of the
times so it's important that you know what you want from your next role.
One of the first things that many job hunters fail to do is actually sit down and assess what they want from their next job, what they've learnt in their current role and what areas and skills you want to develop. This will enable you to clearly market yourself to professional recruitment services and potential employers what you want from your next role. Think of it like pitching a new product, but that product is you, so try and think of things that make you stand out from the other job hunters out there.
If you are serious about finding a job then you will need to join a professional recruitment service or, as they are more commonly known, a recruitment agency. The process is quick and easy and typically involves sending them your CV and a quick chat to discuss what you are looking for. Try to avoid signing up with too many agencies as this may result in your CV being sent to the same employer. One way of avoiding this is to enquire whether the agency has any exclusive benefits if you register with them. The agencies of any worth should be actively marketing your CV to its clients and also targeting companies on your behalf.
When choosing a recruitment agency it would be beneficial to ask if the consultants work on a commission basis - if they do you'll find that they won't be as objective as they should be when sending out your CV to potential clients. You should also enquire whether the agency gives every consultant that is relevant to your skills access to you CV or not. Otherwise you will only be informed of the handful of roles that the consultant that has you CV deals with.
Another vital tool for the job seeker should be online research, looking and researching job boards for the industry you are looking for, uploading your CV and setting up email job alerts that will be sent to you directly. Using search engines should bring back a wealth of results that will help your job search. The only downside is that you can never be too sure where your CV will end up, although most reputable sites now have visibility features so you can control the use of your information.
Whatever industry you want to work in, you can never learn too much about it. Read up about the issues affecting it and any future events/products that might change it. Having this knowledge will give you that edge over the other candidates when you go for an interview. Having a look in appropriate trade press and company websites will also tell you what that company is up to, who is leaving or being promoted. Showing up to an interview with knowledge can never be a bad thing!
