Using Reimage To Remedy A Blue Screen Of Death

This post details one solution to the blue screen of death error by using a PC maintenance software solution called Reimage to get a computer fixed

. I happened across this issue after the fatal error caused my machine to completely freeze and fail to reboot correctly.

The desktop PC I use as an FTP server and isolated test machine had been running well over the past few years and regularly received Windows updates. The fact it was running well was the main reason I chose not to upgrade to Vista or Windows 7.

The machine appeared to be a good candidate then for testing out some application installations. Unfortunately, the server application I installed was quite old and (I suspect) intended for Vista rather than Windows XP. On starting the application the blue screen of death appeared with the error - 'c0000218 Registry File Failure: The registry cannot load the hive'.

As any Windows user will testify, the first thing to try is to reboot the PC. This did not resolve the issue. I went on line from my work laptop and tried some research on the error. It was clear that the application installation had corrupted some registry keys.

I had seen this fixed before (on Windows NT) by rebooting from a Windows disk then over-riding the registry with an older working copy. This failed to even get into the Windows login screen on XP.

At this point, I was dreading the thought of reinstalling Windows just to get the registry fixed so I researched on-line fixes and solutions. The product Reimage claimed to be able to fix blue screens and machines that could boot so it seemed to be worth a try. In addition, the product appears to be able to fix OS issues, registry key problems and virus damage so I reckoned that using it would cover a number a bases (that is, I wasn't sure this was purely a registry problem).

The first step was to create a book disk using the application downloaded from their website. The faulty PC booted fine from the disk in a safe mode and brought up IE to run an ActiveX scan of the machine. This highlighted the registry keys at fault along with a bunch of device drivers that were out of date.

At this stage, the Reimage review prompted me with the option to fix the issues. This started a process to download some files (drivers mainly from what I could see) and these were installed. The system is then rebooted. All in all, the Windows XP machine was repaired, rebooted and working again in less than 30 minutes. I un-installed the faulty application and backed up all data and the registry file once again.

Reimage does appear to be a very useful application that is easy to use and had effectively remedied what I would have previously considered a fatal error on this Windows XP box.
