Protecting your belongings from the elements can be easy if you have all the right equipment and know how to use it at the right time

. Tarp poles, as you'll learn, are just as important in this task as finding and using the right tarps.

Poles and tarps are usually purchased separately, for a variety of reasons, although some camping stores do sell a type of "beginner's" package that will help you through perhaps your first camping trip. For the more experienced adventurer, buying them separately is the way to go.

Most important, the poles must be able to not only support the tarp, but any additional weight that may be added to the tarp. For instance, a tarp that is meant to cover a tent and its immediate surroundings in the event of a storm should be matched with poles that can hold up the tarp before and during the downpour, and withstand some pretty heavy winds.

The tarp poles are usually made of aluminum and various mixtures of metals to add strength and durability. Custom wood poles are frequently better, however, they are more difficult to transport since they won't collapse.

Each tarp pole should have the capability of being set up quickly. This includes having a stake at the bottom which can easily and quickly be plunged into the ground by just about anyone on the camping trip, including your ten year old son. If there's only one person who can manage this, you need to rethink your emergency procedures.

Also make certain that you understand how to determine the number of poles you need for the size and type of tarp you are using. Don't guess! If you are unsure, ask one of the salespeople at a reputable camping outdoor store. Weight, material, size and ground material should all be taken into consideration when buying the right poles.
