While I am admittedly a latecomer to what is now a classic, self improvement has been a constant goal for some time.

As the previous sales figures indicate, I am certainly not the only person in this. The promise of working more effectively and/or efficiently is incredibly appealing, but few know how to actually achieve this. It seems that all too often we have the wrong work habits, and we jump into the tasks at hand without any structuring or prioritization. There are many helpful books on the topic and while some promise a quick and easy solution, few actually manage to deliver. Part of becoming more effective and/or efficient, is adopting a new mindset. This needs training and constant application and unfortunately doesn't happen overnight.

For that matter, changing your mindset and work habits can be likened to following a workout schedule. Just as with sports, self improvement takes time and practice. Without the necessary work and effort, becoming truly effective will take forever. However, as with sports there are some tips and tools to help you reach your goals sooner.

One helpful tip is to prioritize your efforts and focus on the important things at hand. This includes eliminating all irrelevant work processes that take unnecessarily long. For instance, remember that market research you performed and all those interviews you conducted? Or what about all those personal notes you dictated earlier? Those all need to be typed out at one point. When you realize that 1 minute of spoken text takes approximately 4 minutes of typing, you may consider there is a much better use of your time. Outsourcing this part of your work can save huge amounts of time, which may be directly reinvested in the more important things at hand.
