Using the Bradford Factor to measure the impact staff absence has on the business
The Bradford Factor (or Bradford Index)is a widely used method to identify members of staff whose absenteeism needs to be reviewed.
It is based on the theory that short, frequent and unplanned absences are far more disruptive to any organisation than longer, planned absence where cover can be more easily planned and organised.
Using theBradford Factor, employees who are prone to taking odd days off at random will have a high Bradford Factor, immediately alerting managers and questioning whether their illness is genuine or not.
Used effectively, the Bradford Factor can significantly reduce absenteeism by serving both as a deterrent and a method of addressing repeated absences.
Example
James has been sik on two occasionstotalling 12 days his bradford factor is 48.
Robert has also been sick fro a total of 12 days but has been absent on 5 separate occasions his Bradford factor is 300.
This shows that the impact Robert's absences have had on the business is much grater than James's.
The Bradford Factor is Calculated as
Absence Spells X Absence Spells X Total Days Absent = Bradford Factor
Compiling the data and calculating the Bradford Factor can be an extremely time consuming process and, if done by traditional methods ie. Using Excel or reviewing calendars and diaries, can be subject to error, and subsequent distortion.
However solftware solutions like
Activ Absence Control will calculate each employee's Bradford Factor quickly, easily and automatically with pre-defined trigger points to alert management.
By simply entering any absences directly onto the Activ Absence Control online system, time consuming and error-prone manual process becomes a quick, accurate, automated diagnostic which, importantly, is impartial and can be tracked over time ...benefitting the employees, the managers and the business.
The Bradford Factor should be personalised to suit your own company's policieschoosing your own trigger points, decide whether to monitor on a daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly or yearly basis, or any combination which best meets your requirements.
Let the Bradford Factor work for you in identifying absenteeism problems in a manner that rather than simply counting the spells of absence provides a measure of the impact on the business.
