The call for Christian unity, which the Second Vatican Council revived with such impassioned commitment resonates with increasing force in the hearts of believers, especially the approach of two thousand to be a Jubilee to their sacred memory of 'Incarnation of the Son of God who became man to save man.The courageous witness of so many martyrs of our century, including members of other Churches and Ecclesial Communities not in full communion with the Catholic Church, gives new vigor to the Council and reminds us of the obligation to accept and put into practice its exhortation. These brothers and sisters, united in the selfless offering of their lives for the Kingdom of God, are the most powerful proof that every factor of division can be transcended and overcome in the total gift of self for the sake of the Gospel.Christ calls all his disciples to unity. The ardent desire that moves me is to renew this call today, to propose it again with determination, repeating what I said at the Roman Colosseum on Good Friday 1994, concluding meditation on the Stations of the Cross, prepared by my Venerable Brother Bartholomew, Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople. I stated that the fact that, united in the footsteps of the martyrs, believers in Christ can not remain divided. If they wish truly and effectively combat the world's tendency to reduce to powerlessness the Mystery of Redemption, they must profess together the same truth about Croce.1 The Cross!

The interfaith dialogues at the theological level have produced positive and tangible results: this encourages us to move forward.However, besides the doctrinal differences to be resolved, Christians can not underestimate the burden of ancestral misunderstandings that they have inherited from the past, misunderstandings and prejudices towards each other. Not infrequently, then, inertia, indifference and insufficient knowledge of each other this situation worse.

For this reason, the commitment to ecumenism must be based upon the conversion of hearts and upon prayer, which will also lead to the necessary purification of historical memory. By the grace of the Holy Spirit, the Lord's disciples, inspired by love, by truth and by a sincere desire for mutual forgiveness and reconciliation, are called to re-examine together their painful past and the hurt which that past regrettably continues to provoke even today. They are invited by the ever fresh power of Gospel to acknowledge with sincere and total objectivity the mistakes made and the contingent factors at work the origins of their deplorable divisions. We need a calm, clear eyes of truth, enlivened by divine mercy and capable of freeing the minds and of inspiring in everyone a renewed willingness, precisely with a view of the Gospel to people of every people and nation.
