Time was when it was tedious to get a college education from the United Kingdom. First and foremost, you had to take an aptitude exam to see what type of education you were qualified for. This system though efficient may have been a bit biased since it tested your predisposition towards a certain field. Predispositions are not necessarily based on IQ but EQ as well. And there is the matter of desire and choice. What these exams did not measure was the willingness of a person to strive to a degree that one wanted. Take for example Cardiff, whose schools specialize in areas of Maritime concerns simply because it still is a maritime related center in the United Kingdom.At any rate, the presence of Internet technology enables other people from different places in the United Kingdom and in fact all over the world to acquire education of specialized degrees through distance learning. People who through their previous exams could not take a certain course are now able to learn such course through distance learning. This is so prevalent these days as perhaps the convenience of distance learning, the prospect of learning a craft, trade or vocation, and the present economic conditions are compelling reasons for taking such programs.For such educational institutions that offer distance learning, it is also to their advantage as they are able to optimize their resources. The normal inhibiting factor in any university is space. There are only so many students that can enroll in a course and stay in the campus. The internet has made it possible for people to enroll in a course and yet not have to stay in a campus. Lectures can be viewed online either through live video feeds or by taped downloads. Assignments can be handed and turned in through email. Consultations can be made through chat programs, whether that program is through text or with a web cam feed. Distance learning in the United Kingdom has enabled people who could not enroll in universities for various reasons in the past to now take part in earning a degree from colleges and universities that may be far away or be specialized and known for such programs. It is perhaps one of the best utilization of the Internet: the ability to educate people from distant places.
