, Safari is a Swahili word which means a long journey. A safari is an expedition usually undertaken over land through a forested area with the intention of observing nature and wildlife. Originally restricted to hunting, the term now encompasses the total experience of observing nature without disturbing the natural habitat.

There are several types of safaris, like jeep safaris, where a group of people on a jeep roam around a jungle. There are elephant safaris where one can observe wildlife on an elephants back. However, Jeep Safaris follow pre-determined routes and are really not able to get in the forest failing to provide the complete experience. Elephant safaris too (while going much deeper in the jungles) are too slow and cover a much shorter distance.

Horse Safari combines the best of both worlds wherein you can have both the pace of travel as well as go as much inside the forest as you desire. No experience can match the joy of traversing through Indian forests and mountains riding on horseback.

And the one state in India that provides the scenic beauty to complement this experience is Uttarakhand. The state offers a diverse range of sights right from the majestic Himalayas to the mesmerizing forests of the plains, from the spiritual glory of Hardwar and Rishikesh to the bountiful natural beauty of the Kumaon and Garhwali hills.

Horse safaris are available throughout Uttarakhand. Primary among these is the one at The Jim Corbett National Park. While most people opt for the traditional jeep safari, a horse safari provides unseen insight into the forest, which is not possible to view by jeep. Amongst tall trees and serene lakes, one can view nature at its best. Spotting a herd of deer, a rare species of bird or even the elusive tiger on horseback takes the wildlife experience to a completely new level.

Other good sites for horse safaris are at Rishikesh and Hardwar where one can view the river Ganga in all its might. Many hill stations like Nainital, Bhimtal, and Mussoorie also have excellent trails for horse safaris.
