Vacation Tips For Paphos, Cyprus

When you're ready to leave your comfortable rooms at the Elysium Hotel Paphos

, you'll find plenty of things to do right nearby. Why not spend start your day by exploring Paphos castle, which is a UNESCO world heritage site located in Kato Paphos at the harbor. This stunning stone-walled castle is actually just a small part of a Byzantine fort built by "Ahmed Pasha in 1592 A. D. to protect the harbor. The Castle that we see today is just the remains of the western tower. You can still see the remains of the eastern tower about 200 ft away on the breakwater, which gives you some idea of the original massive scale of this once formidable fortress.

The remaining fort has two floors, with 5 rooms at the ground level. There are opening in the floor that let you look down into the prison cells below. Opposite the main entrance you'll find the steps leading up to the roof. The steps are definitely a bit steep and narrow, but once you get to the top you'll enjoy a magnificent view of the Marina and Kato Paphos in all its glory.

Another popular tourist site for Elysium Hotel Paphos guests are The Tombs of the Kings. Carved out of solid rock and spread over a vast area, these impressive underground tombs date from the 4th century BC through the 3rd Century AD. But be warned - the name is a bit misleading since not a single king was buried here.

This area was actually used mainly by the wealthy nobility. Interestingly, they choose to build their tombs like their homes, with Doric columns at the entrance and an atrium in the middle. Later on these tombs were used by persecuted Christians for both burial and refuge towards the end of the 4th century, and during medieval times some of them were even used as temporary homes.

You can easily spend 2-3 hours touring the Tombs, but be sure to take some water with you because there isn't much shade and the area gets very hot.

When you're touring the Paphos area, you'll certainly come across the legend of Aphrodite and see several spots dedicated to this ancient goddess of love and beauty. Tradition has it that Aphrodite first sprang out of the Mediterranean sea near Paphos in 12 000 BC. There's even a large rock that rises from the waters known as Petra tou Romiou to mark the exact location.

Petra tou Romiou is situated right next to The Akamas Peninsula and not surprisingly it's a major tourist attraction for visitors to Paphos. The actual name of the rock translates as "The Rock of the Greek" and surprisingly it has nothing to do with Aphrodite. Instead it comes from a famous legendary frontier-guard in the Byzantine period named Dighenis Akritas who is remembered for hurling a large rock (Petra), at his enemies.

Other mementos of Aphrodite on Paphos include the Baths of Aphrodite at Polis. According to legend, the goddess Aphrodite used to take her beauty baths in this natural grotto, shaded by a fig tree, which you can still see here today. And nearby is the Fontana Amorosa "Fountain of Love" whose waters are claimed to possess a love potion that charms all who taste them. You may or may not want to try it for yourself, but either way, you'll find that the Baths of Aphrodite and other attractions near the Elysium Hotel Paphos are great sites to see when you spend your vacation at Paphos, Cyprus.
