Vacationers Share The Road With Style

One of the children would hear the roar and we would all crane our necks to watch the caravan of Harley riders

. Often it seemed as if there were hundreds of them in their Harley Davidson's leather jackets riding two by two along the highway. We would love to see them ride along side us for a little while and always they would pass us on there way to somewhere.

Those were the good old days of family vacations. We had a large blue van which my Father cut windows in the back on the sides. The benches lay down and the five of us children were always sleeping while my Mom read to us. There were no seat belt laws or car seat laws in those day, you just made yourself a bed, got comfortable and enjoyed the ride. The hours went by quickly, even without a DVR, Nintendo or other such entertainment devices. We talked, read and slept. We did have the inevitable, "don't make me stop this car" occasionally and then whoever was killing who would stop for a little while. But for the most part they were pleasant trips as long as we didn't go too far.

Once we were Yellowstone and to the delight of all the children the Harley Group was passing through and made a bike parade each morning on their way into the park. I don't think we saw a lot of animals that trip with all the noise from the bikes, but we sure loved it. The men and women in their leather Harley jackets, bandana's, leather chaps, long hair and long handle bars made an impressive sight. I loved the roar of the engines, I was fascinated by the big tough looking men and often wondered where they found girls willing to ride across the country like that.

I was always grateful that I had a comfortable van to ride in instead of a Harley, but I could appreciate the wind blowing threw their hair and the open road with all their friends. I didn't want their lifestyle but I sure liked to watch and think about what it would be like.
