This is the most mountainous region of Italy, completely surrounded by the world famous magnificent peaks of the Alps: Monte Bianco, Cervino, Monte Rosa and Gran Paradiso. The latter is located in the heart of a magnificent national park, inhabited by unique species of mountain goats, chamois and eagles. Numerous glaciers of Italy feed clean rivers, which flow in the lower part of the valley, and constitute a river system of a basin Dora Baltea. Obvious alpine features of this region can be represented by pine forests in enough high places, where they give place only to large pastures. Small pearls of alpine lakes are framed into majestic mountain sceneries, which are here in abundance in Italy. Important communications pass through the tunnels Monte Bianco and Gran San Bernardo nowadays. Cities: Aosta is the capital of the region, which is controlled by special laws of Italy, in which Italian and French languages are officially recognized. Art: Traces of the Roman Empire can be found in the Valle: the city walls, theater, Arch of Augustus and the city gates. Visitors can admire the Romanesque cathedral, which dates back to the eleventh century. The church Sant'Orso is an excellent example of medieval architecture in Italy. There are a lot of survived fortified castles in the Aosta Valley. Many of them are in perfect condition and are open to visitors, a lot of castles have become museums of local history. The most famous are Fenis, Aymavilles, Issogne and Verres. What you should visit: Matterhorn, Monte Rosa, Monte Bianco you can reach them only via the highest cableways in Europe and in Italy; a beautiful National Park Gran Paradiso, in winter numerous ski resorts. There are typical villages with quaint houses of local inhabitants. Saint Vincent and the casinos offer a wide range of entertainment.
