Value of Complex Event Processing in Managing Composite Applications

Value of Complex Event Processing in Managing Composite Applications

Composite, multi-tier applications are becoming the norm in IT. They are inherently complex. These complex systems often display behavior that would be very difficult to predict from the functional design of the individual parts. It is only as the parts are combined into a composite, cross-tier structure that the unexpected properties result. As businesses leverage the cloud and initiate transactions spanning from the datacenter to the cloud and back this complexity and unpredictability increases even more.

This is one of the reasons that composite applications fail at unexpected times. Everything can appear to be going just fine. Then the ability of the unit to hide the small failures that have been occurring all along is finally breached. Suddenly, what appeared to be "normal" behavior, unexpectedly cascades into "abnormal" behavior.

Identifying "Normal" vs. "Abnormal" Application Behavior

What may be normal behavior in one IT environment could be abnormal behavior in another. For example, in a system where servers are clustered, a "server down" alert may not be red flag that needs immediate attention. Of course, it is important to IT, but it may have no visible impact to end-users. Yet, in a system with a different configuration, this might be a clear indication of a failed system that has mission critical status and significant business impact.

There are many performance attributes within a complex application IT environmentresponse time, volume, latency, etc. How do you know whether transactions are behaving within their normal parameters or are deviating toward abnormal? This is vital information to understanding how complex systems behave.

Business Transaction Management and Complex Event Processing

Complex Event Processing (CEP) is the tool that gives business transaction management software and application performance management software its ability to infer what behaviors are business normal and business abnormal. First, the CEP engine identifies all of the transaction flows between applications. It looks for patterns in the event cloud. It learns intuitively what changes are business normal vs. abnormal.

A well-designed complex event processing (CEP) engine is capable of discovering and analyzing what each transaction is doing in the event cloud. Whether the source of a transaction is Java or .NET or any number of other applications, the CEP engine can, in real time, analyze the data to identify a number of issues which have been hidden.

For example, what has been considered "normal" may in reality be unacceptable performance. It may be taking 10 seconds for a company's e-commerce site to complete a purchase transaction, leaving end-users with a negative feeling about the company. So even through the transaction is completing properly, the CEP engine has identified an area that IT can address to improve customer satisfaction.

This is an example of how complex event processing and business transaction management (BTM) work hand in hand to provide the necessary tools for managing composite applications. BTM tracks every transaction from end-to-end, providing the visibility to identify what is happening, when it is happening and where it is happening within the event cloud. CEP intuitively infers where issues are developing, such as identifying when transactions don't complete or fail to provide error messages. And business rules on top of CEP determine if the issues CEP has inferred as failing or ones that will fail are of business impact.

Nastel's AutoPilot Complex Event Processing Engine

Nastel is a leader in business transaction management software primarily and has integrated a complex event processing (CEP) engine into its AutoPilot solution providing both business transaction management abilities and application performance management capabilities. Using the CEP engine, AutoPilot does more than record the volume of transactions that are traversing both distributed tiers whether on a mainframe or on the cloud. It gathers real-time performance data for every type of transaction. This data is then automatically compared to service level agreements (SLAs) and other benchmarks to assure that any trending toward a breach is identified early and alerts issued.

AutoPilot uses the complex event processing engine to identify issues that have the potential to become cascading failures before they have the chance to disrupt business processes and impact users. While doing this, the CEP engine also reveals when applications are being underutilized or are reaching capacity. AutoPilot also provides a wizard driven interface for specifying business rules to further qualify what the CEP has analyzed. These business rules enable the user to auto-determine whether an issue either current or predicted will have business impact.

These are just a few examples demonstrating why including a BTM solution with CEP as part of a proactive IT strategy is a valuable investment for any business.
