It is a fact that not all poker variations follow the same positional pattern. While in one game of poker a certain position may hold a certain importance, in another variation of the game of poker, this position maybe useless. So if you are planning to shift between poker variations, it will help to understand the value of position in these games.

Before we launch into how position works in poker let us understand what is meant by position. The position of the player is his/her relationship to other players on the table in reference to betting. So if the player bets first then he/she is said to be in an early position, while the player that bets last, is in the late position.

So let us understand how position plays a role in the various types of poker

Texas Hold'em This is a fairly simple game of poker, where the play of positions is quite obvious. The player who has to bet first is definitely at a disadvantage since he/she has no clue as to what cards the other players hold. The player who bets last gets to judge by the bet of the other players and therefore has the advantage of making the most informed choice. This is why early positions in Texas Hold'em are not considered advantageous and players seated here should play a tight game. On the other hand a player seated in a late position can choose to bet on the weaker hands too and play loose. Texas Hold'em is a game where the fight is usually between poor hands and the winner is the player with the least weak hand. Needless to say, in such a scenario, being able to play last is definitely a huge advantage.

Omaha Lo Hi- Here the last position looses it bluffing power, which seems to be bestowed on the middle position player. Middle position though looses out in the sharing of the pot, since a nut hand gets very difficult to play from this slot. Those holding a low hand will find that betting from the first position works much better for them.

Seven Card Stud - Now here the position of the player is not a constant and this is why the play of positions is not as simple as it is in Texas Hold'em. From the fourth round onwards, the player with the highest board get to make the first move. Players on the left have an advantage to players on the right, but it is also true that representing hands are best played by early position players, while some hands are better played in the late position.

As you can see the play of positions varies in each type of poker and this is why it is crucial that you know your positions well in reference to the variation of poker that you are playing.
