Vampire Weekend Tickets - Against All Odds, They Top Charts
With all the Twilight craze, you'd think that Vampire Weekend is a new alternative
rock outfit that came up with their name because of the nation's current vampire obsession. Rather, the nearly four-year act came up with their widely popular name from front man's homemade films from Columbia. The group has, however had luck on their side as Google's top trends have remained "vampire" crazy for months now, helping to spark interest in the group's latest set and current promotional tour.
The Contra tour will see the quartet jet across the coasts for a nine date stint beginning December 10th in Portland, Oregon. Flying back and forth from the West Coast to East Coast, shows will see the New York based outfit hit La Jolla, Universal City and finally three shows in the Big Apple mid January. The group has just released the new single and music video from their 2010 release, "Cousins." The upbeat single is similar to last month's special treat, "Horchata," the first from the sophomore release that gave fans an insight into their inspiration - namely, Mexico. "'Cousins' is a song that we recorded in Mexico City. It's got probably the most demanding bass part Chris [Baio] has wrote for himself, and probably the most demanding drum part Christ Tomson ever did for himself," Rostam Batmanglij said to Rolling Stone. "So it's a demanding song."
The demand is in - and thankfully, Vampire Weekend was prepared. Following the hugely successful self-titled debut, the boys took to the studio and really reworked their techniques. Already fans can hear the difference, as the group shows up at hole-in-the wall spots all over the nation performing their recently penned licks to fans, hoping to elicit either positive or negative responses. Playing "Cousins" in front of a live audience just days after tinkering with it, Batmanglij said there's nothing like that experience; "I have to look at it as just kind of a gift [to the audience], so you try to savor it."
The group was a success right off the bat. All educated at Columbia University, Ezra Koenig, Chris Baio, Batmanglij and Chris Tomson formed the group in 2006 during their senior year and started playing local university gigs and recorded their first few EPs in dorm rooms and neighborhood barns. By 2007 their extreme promotional senses gave way to the CMJ Music Marathon and a record deal with XL Records. The EP Mansard Roof was released that same fall and eventually the self-titled debut appeared in 2008.
The group became the first ever outfit to grace the cover of Spin Magazine before the release of their debut, which helped ignite the Vampire Weekend commercialization. Jumping the Top Twenty charts in the US and UK album charts, the release kept the group on the road for the rest of the year. The group's new album features a mysterious, '80s inspired woman on its cover and is set for release January 12, 2010.
