Vampires In The Modern World
True Blood is a popular television series, based solely from the series of books
from Charlain Harris known as The Southern Vampire Mysteries (sometimes referred to as The Sookie Stackhouse Diaries.) The television series, whilst staying true to the books, has featured adaptations based on audience reactions to certain plots, characters, and situations. For the most part, it is true to the series in most ways.
True Blood follows the story of a half-fairy, half-human hybrid, Sookie Stackhouse, who is a telepathic waitress living in a fictional city called Bon Temps, that is located somewhere in Southern Louisiana. It is here that she meets a handsome, 173 year old vampire, Bill Compton. She finds she cannot read Bills thoughts, and that is how she discovers what he is. Upon becoming involved in Bills world, Sookie discovers that the life she thought she knew, is something altogether strange.
When True Blood first aired in 2008, it had just 2 million viewers on average. However, the following year, when the second season took to the screens, there was an average of 4.28 million watchers. By season 5, there were a steady number of viewers, ranging between 4.5 and 5 million viewers. The rapid increase of viewers and fans of the series proved only to show how the popularity of vampires is still true.
There have been adaptations made from certain things in the True Blood series, such as Tru Blood; a drink which the vampires of the True Blood universe consume in favour of human blood. The defictionalised version is of a blood-red colour, and orange in flavour. These adaptations and defictionalisations have made it even more possible for people of the fancy dress sector to create vampire costumes.
A vampire in the world of True Blood is commonly dressed very now, very modern. This is because they are trying to blend in. however, they still face the old myths. This is why a vampire will never be seen out in the day time, wearing silver, or without long fangs. These fangs can detract, but if a vampire is provoked or made excited in any way, then their fangs shall be bared.
Because of the modernisations of the vampire, and other supernatural creatures, in the True Blood series, it is now easier for people to imitate their looks. Creating a vampire look based from one of the True Blood vampires is a favourite for people to do, especially among the months of Halloween. Many fancy dress retailers are aware of this, which is why they will be sure to have a lot of vampire fangs in store, and their most up to date costumes in stock for a long time.
Of course, with True Blood there has been a rise in vampire popularity for not only the costumes of the vampires, but also more films, books, and games. There are many books and games with the same, or very similar, elements to them as True Blood. With this trend there have been hundreds of spin offs, adaptations, ideas and influenced spurned from the television series that gave vampires a new lease of life.
Infamous: Festival of Blood is a stand-alone spinoff of the game Infamous and was released in 2011. This game features a man called Zeke, who has helped another man named Cole into becoming free of his vampiristic traits that were unwillingly set upon him. Since the release of Infamous: Festival of Blood, it has received positive reviews. On Metacritic, is has received 78/100 from 32 critics, which is mostly an indication of high praise. Gamerankings gave the game a review of 79.14%, another high rank. As of November 19, 2011, Infamous: Festival of Blood is the number one downloaded game on the PlayStation Network, and the number two downloaded game of November 2011.
From this, the success of Infamous has been hard to track, however it is obvious it has continued to do well, and spark and continue the love of the vampire genre. This means that even with the release being so long ago, the love of vampires and vampire-based games is still going strong. Many people are readying themselves for Halloween with a collection of fangs and capes.
Halloween is a time for scaring, tricks, and creatures. Vampires have appeared to never have a dip in popularity as one of those creatures that Halloween is a time for. Because of this, fancy dress retailers are working hard to keep their stocks high of fangs and blood.
