The study found that HIV patients in the USA were more likely to be Asian or Hispanic if they were not born in the USA than those who have spent their entire lives in the USA. There is also a higher probability that the infected individual contracted HIV through heterosexual activities if the individual was not born in the USA.

It is thought that this is due to a language barrier. A large percentage of HIV educational material used in the USA is in English. This means that those who do not understand English, a large percentage of whom are new Hispanic or Asian immigrants, may have difficulty understanding the material and thus do not receive sufficient education regarding the prevention of HIV infection. This means that they do not realise that they are at risk and do not know to get medical care in a timely manner to control and treat the viral infection.

It was also found that a high percentage of these foreign born individuals were male. This indicates that the foreign born male who is of Hispanic or Asian origin is most at risk for HIV infection. Close to half of the newly diagnosed Hispanics in the USA are foreign born and over sixty percent of the newly diagnosed Asians were foreign born.

The study in question based their conclusions on the observation and study of data gathered from almost 200000 individuals from 46 of the states and five of the territories in the USA. Each of these participants was infected with HIV between 2007 and 2010. Just over sixteen percent of these individuals were born outside of the USA.

The study has shed some interesting light on the implications of language barriers in the area of HIV education. This may be very important when it comes to creating education material for countries with numerous official languages such as South Africa. If a similar study were conducted in South Africa it is possible that the results would show that those groups who do not have HIV education available in their home language will show a higher rate of new infection than those that have the relevant educational material available in their home language.

There is still much that is not known about HIV and what part things such as language barriers and economic standings may play in the rate of infection. More studies are done each year and more information is revealed that may help to better control the virus and better educate individuals as to its prevention and treatment.
