Varifocals have a wide scope of prescription strengths in the same lens

, meaning they have a wider "corridor" over which vision is close to natural. This allows you to select the best lens strength to view objects at any distance, near or far. This "corridor" of change in lens power is what makes varifocals so different from bifocals and can improve vision to a state beyond that created by bifocals.

However, some people do find that when looking out from the non-central parts of the lens, their vision is distorted, and it is often this, combined with getting used to positioning the head differently for close and far viewing, that puts people off of using varifocals. With advances in modern technology, varifocals have been created with larger reading portions (or far distance portions) of the lens, as well as varying sizes of corridor. This allows you to chose the type of lens that would best suit your lifestyle and needs. A shallow frame varifocal has also been developed to allow varifocal wearers to keep up with the current trend for narrow frames.

Varifocals eliminate the need for carrying two pairs of glasses (one for reading and one pair for distance viewing), as well as providing a means to view objects at all distances in clarity by allowing you the selection of prescription strengths in the corridor portion of the lens. With a bit of perseverance and determination in the first few weeks of obtaining new varifocals, you will have your vision improved above and beyond what you could ever have hoped for!
