Simple Lenses have one optical element while the compound lenses have a combination of multiple simple lenses.
Types Of Simple Lenses:
Simple Lenses comprise of two optical surfaces. The radii of curvature of these two surfaces form the basis of classification of Simple Lenses. Simple Lenses can further be classified into:
Convex Lens
When both the surfaces of lens are convex, the lens is referred to as biconvex lens or simply convex lens.
Concave Lens
When both the surfaces of lens are concave, the lens is referred to as biconcave lens or simply concave lens.
Plano Convex Lens
When one surface of the Lens is convex and the other is plane, the lens is referred to as Plano Convex Lens.
Plano Concave Lens
When one surface of the Lens is concave and the other is plane, the lens is referred to as Plano Concave Lens.
Equi-convex Lens
When both surface of the lens are convex and have equal radii of curvature, the lens is referred to as Equi-convex Lens.
Convex Concave Lens
When one surface of the lens is convex and the other is concave, the lens is called Convex Concave Lens.
Compound Lenses
Spherical aberration and chromatic aberration are two disadvantages associated with Simple Lenses. To overcome these problems, Compound Lenses are used. These Lenses comprises of several of simple Lenses which are arranged in such a way so as to eliminate aberrations. There are several types of Compound Lenses that include Zoom Lenses, Telephoto Lenses, Wide Angle Lenses, etc.
