Vauxhall Vectra Engine: Life Support For A Dying Breed
Vauxhall Vectra Engine: Life Support for A Dying Breed
This successor of Opel Ascona was produced from 1988 till 2008 but it was only until 1995 when Vauxhall badge was attached to Vectra. Vectra is sold under different manufacturer names, in Australia Holden used it with same badge and in Latin America Chevrolet used it without changing its name. First generation Vauxhall Vectra, also known as Vectra A, was launched in 1988 and it remained in production till 1995. The Vectra A was a front engine family car, available either in front wheel drive or in AWD mode. The 4 and 5 door body styles were launched with options for choosing either 5, 6 speed manual or with 4 speed auto gearbox. Vauxhall Vectra engines (petrol) were launched in range of 1.4 to 2.5 litre capacity, whereas, 1.7 litre diesel engine was also offered in first generation Vectra.
Second generation, Vectra B, was produced from 1995 till 2002, this time 4, 5 and 6 door body trims were introduced in Vauxhall lineup. In second generation Vauxhall Vectra engines (petrol) were offered in range from 1.6 to 2.5 litre, whereas, in diesel, 1.7, 2.0 and 2.2 litre engines were offered. Third generation, Vectra C, was produced from 2002 till 2008 in 4 and 5 door trims. Vauxhall only offered one 3.0 litre V6 diesel engine and 1.8, 1.9, 2.0 and 2.8 (V6) litre petrol engines. Six speed auto and manual transmission was offered.
Whats surprising about Vauxhall Vectra engines, especially 1.8, 1.9, 2.0 petrol and 2.0 diesel engine was the remarkable mileage that they achieved on motorways. Vectra could easily achieve mileage in range of 26 to 50 miles/ gallon, an impressive feat considering size and weight of Vectra. Whats more astonishing was the running cost of these cars, though they depreciate a lot quicker but they were economical to maintain.
Bigger Vauxhall Vectra engines, especially the V6s, produced enough grunt that Vectra entered many touring car races, from BTCC to APTC, and despite ending on podium on more than one occasions, this performance couldnt improve its dwindling sales in Europe and UK. At the very best it could manage a top ten finish in Britains Most Popular Cars survey, though first generation Vectra was fourth favorite car in UK. Because of low sales, stocks pilled up so the third generation Vectra wasnt even launched in Australia and New Zealand, resulting eventually in cancellation of Vectra brand.
