Vegetable Gardening
Now that I have decided to grow my own vegetable garden, where should I put my garden?
Location of the garden is important. Choose a location where there is:
Adequate amount of sunlight. Ensure that the garden is not shaded by nearby high rise buildings or trees, since they do not grow well in shade.
Access to water. Garden plants need water to grow well.
Good drainage system to drain water from the roots.
Adequate flow of air but not windy, as winds will dry the soil.
Flat bed or level land. This prevents soil erosion.
What should I grow in my vegetable garden?
Obviously, vegetables of your choice. It can be those that you have always loved to eat but could not find them in the local grocery store. It could even be those organic vegetables that you like, but are expensive to buy in the market. Or maybe you could start with some vegetables that are easy to grow. For amateur gardeners, tomatoes, peppers, corn, potatoes, onions and peas are great vegetables to start a garden with. On gaining experience, you can explore the possibilities of growing other vegetables.
Do I start my vegetable garden from a seed or buy a seedling?
Answering this question can be tricky. If you start from a seed, then you will need to grow them indoors for at least a few months prior to the start of the growing season. After seedlings appear, they must be transplanted out. However, this may not be practical when the growing season is short or when the plant is sensitive to transplanting.
On the other hand, if we choose to buy a seedling, it can be directly planted into the garden.
So, the decision ultimately boils down to answering two questions
Is the vegetable sensitive to transplantation?
How long is the growing season?
If the vegetable plant does not take transplantation well or if the growing season is short, then it is best to directly plant the seedling.
Otherwise, you can consider starting a garden vegetable plant from the seed. You might find that you need to use a seedling mat to maintain enough heat for germination, particularly if you are in a cold climate or temperatures fluctuate wildly.
How to prepare compost for my vegetable garden?
Compost provides nourishment to your vegetable garden seeds or seedlings. Compost can be made by residues of easily available organic matter like orange rings, eggshells, manure etc. It is better to prepare the compost at least a year in advance, so that when you plough the garden to loosen soil, the organic matter will break down when you mix the compost with soil.
How to go about the maintenance of vegetable garden?
The vegetable garden needs to be tended to regularly. Some tips are provided below
Watering the plants regularly will keep them healthy. The frequency of watering should be increased if the temperature is too hot. Ideally, two inches weekly is a good idea
Removing the weeds away is an important part of maintenance regimen. It can be prevented by mulching. Mulching is a type of cover that is used to contain weed growth in addition to providing moisture to the roots.
Fencing: Fencing can be considered in order to keep the animals away. A barbed wire or a series of wooden stakes can be put up as fence.
So, get ready to grow your own vegetable garden and enjoy the sweet taste of your hard work, quite literally.
