Vehicle Insurance
It was not that many years ago that certain states didn't have a mandatory requirement for vehicle insurance, beyond basic liability cover
. Today, all states require full insurance cover and it is illegal to drive without it. However, despite knowing the implications of driving without insurance, many people still choose to. The majority of people who admit to driving without insurance, or are caught driving without insurance say that the reason they haven't got insurance is because the cost is prohibitive. It is an unfortunate fact that insurance premiums are incredibly expensive for young drivers, and it is young drivers who are mainly the people that don't buy vehicle insurance.
If you are involved in an accident and are unable to prove you have insurance (it is now an offence not to show your prove of insurance at an accident scene) it may lead to a citation. You will be notified that, unless you are able to provide satisfactory prove that your vehicle had insurance on the day and time of the accident, your driving privileges and vehicle registrations will be stopped for a period of 12 months. You will also have to prove that you have deposit an amount of money with the Department of Transportation to cover any cost associated with the accident; this amount of money can be prohibitively high.
Lastly, you will need to show that you have, or are in process of, settling any claims between other parties involved in the accident. Once these driving privileges have been taken away, it can be an arduous task getting them back again.
If you are involved in an accident and are concerned that the other driver may not have vehicle insurance it is best to advice your own insurance company as soon as possible of your concerns. It is always wise to buy legal protection cover and uninsured driver cover as part of your vehicle insurance package. It does increase the premium, but it means you have access to top lawyers to fight any case you may have against an uninsured driver and you also have the peace of mind of knowing that you will be paid out from your insurer and your insurer will try to recoup the costs itself.
If you have been injured and you think the other driver may not be insured, it is sensible to have a short chat with a specialist vehicle lawyer. In most instances the first meeting doesn't involve a fee. You get to find out your rights and you can get an idea of the likely cost.
Having vehicle insurance is important and the legal consequences for not having insurance can be high and costly. If you are a parent of young adults and they have a car; check to make sure they have insurance. If cost is an issue then see if you can find a way of helping finance it for a while. Every year that passes means that the insured persons get a reduction in their premium, if they haven't made a claim.
