Vehicles With Firmly Mounted Car Dvd Players

You do a lot of stupid stuff when you're young

, like stealing car DVD players and selling them to the local pawnshop for a little extra cash. This is what I used to do emphasis on used to when I was a teen.

I steered far away from gangbanger antics like carjacking or running hot stuff, yeah, but I carved my own little slice of the pie back then. I made a bit of money borrowing stuff from idiots careless enough to leave their cars out in the more unguarded areas of town.

The first thing I did back in the day was scope out a car for valuable stuff inside. Portable electronics like laptops were hot marks, since they were easy to grab, hide and run with when I had to.

A mounted DVD player for car entertainment, however, usually turned me off.My modus and the modus of many car thieves I knew was to prioritize speed over value. I won't go into detail about how I open a car, except that I needed two heavy-duty screwdrivers and 10 seconds. After that, I'll only have a few seconds to reach in and grab what I can before walking or running away if the car had an alarm system installed. In that short time frame, I would rather pick up a 50 dollar portable gadget in 2 seconds than a 500 dollar system in 60 seconds.

This is also why I tended to stay away from cars with passenger DVD systems.A car with a dash or headrest DVD player might make it look more attractive to a newbie car thief, but smart thieves and even smarter carjackers know to stay far, far away from cars like these.

Those days are far behind me now, and I'm writing this to give a word of caution to car owners that travel around a lot.

My main message is this: if you're going to get an in-car entertainment system, a car with DVD systems mounted firmly in place is a safer option than a laptop, tablet or portable player.

Mounted, headrest or dash DVD players are typically secured with screws and bolts. This makes them virtually impossible to rip out, at least not without doing irreparable damage to the whole unit. I didn't want to hit cars with mounted car DVD players because they tended to have obnoxiously loud security systems as well.

Carjackers also stayed away from these cars because these cars tended to have GPS tracking devices installed in them too. They preferred to hit older dumb cars instead of the new smart ones. When they find laptops, tablets or smart phones, they just toss them out the window to reduce the chances that they get tracked via GPS.

So to repeat my point: if you're going for a car DVD entertainment system, mount it firmly in place and stay away from the portable models. Try to get one with GPS capabilities, like an Android-powered system, and you'll be a less attractive target for both thieves and carjackers alike.
