All homeowners should be aware that their properties are not immune from attack by thieves; as such, steps ought to be taken to ensure that basic security measures are employed to reduce the threat of burglary. Vertical blinds in the home offer occupants a number of benefits. Aside from their considerable aesthetic appeal, vertical blinds are entirely practical and functional. Unlike curtains, vertical blinds can be dusted and cleaned easily; they also tend to attract less dirt and dust than traditional horizontal blinds.

One of the most obvious benefits is that they can manage sunlight to the operator's precise requirements; indeed, they can direct sunlight in a number of different directions (usually within a 180-degree parameter) or block it out completely. Sunlight management is especially important where furniture and other items in the home require protection from overexposure. Perhaps the most important benefit, however, is that they can help to increase security in the home.

Home Office statistics show that reported burglaries in the UK are, fortunately, on the decline. Although no account can be made for break-ins that go unreported, the statistics remain encouraging for homeowners. In 2009/2010, approximately 659,000 burglaries were reported to the police, of which around 276,000 involved the loss of personal property. Compared to 2008/2009, the UK enjoyed a 9 per cent reduction in burglaries last year.

Some crime analysts have since claimed that, despite an expected increase in burglaries due to the recession, the number of reported burglaries has fallen because more homeowners are taking security more seriously. Burglar alarms, motion sensor alarms, CCTV cameras, spyholes, floodlights and improved door and window locks are all key to improving the security of a home. Vertical blinds have also been mentioned as an effective deterrent to burglars.

Vertical blinds provide an additional element of security because they are able to keep prying eyes from peering into a property. It is thought that many burglars are opportunist criminals who are unlikely to break into a property unless they have already surveyed its interior from the outside, which also means that homeowners need not worry about hiding their valuables. Additionally, the burglar who enters a home through a window covered by vertical blinds will almost certainly make more noise and expend more effort than one who is merely required to overcome a pair of curtains.

Finally, they are available in various sizes, shapes, styles, materials and colours, from red vertical blinds to natural-looking wood or composite blinds. Homeowners need not substitute style for security when buying vertical blinds.
