Veterinary Managers - The Missing Link Between Clinicians And Administrative Staff

For a veterinary practice to be successful, there needs to be a balance between clinical and non-clinical skills

. As a practice grows, and more administrative staff is necessary, veterinary managers are responsible for assisting in this balance. These managers are referred to as office managers, practice managers or practice administrators. They are sometimes partners in the practice and define the vision and set the goals with the other owners. At other times, they are simply the administrator who directs the staff to ensure the goals of the business are met. Often these managers are promoted from the existing nursing or technical staff.

Though veterinary managers over see the administrative staff on a daily basis, they have several other responsibilities. They analyze reports that focus on business trends and assist in planning new services. The most successful managers are those who have a clear understanding of their role in the business and the expectations of the owners. The job description often depends on the size of the practice and the range of services offered. Many owners prefer to be more hands-on than others. As a result, responsibilities and salary varies greatly. There are many courses available that provide teach basic management and business skills.

These courses may be offered individually, focused on improving the skills of an existing manager, or as part of a certificate program. Many practices are looking for managers experienced in the industry, but find many have only the management experience. The certificate programs provide training in specialized areas that will make them effective veterinary managers. The level of responsibility varies, but most practice managers need basic financial and strategic management skills in addition to general office and personnel management experience. Marketing and client communications may also fall into their purview.

General management is a broad-based term that applies to many aspects of the business, from reconciling bank deposits and receipts to ensuring the office equipment is kept in good working condition and supplies are available. Computer skills must enable them to use a variety of programs. If there is no human resources department, the veterinary manager often is responsible for many personnel issues, from standardizing job descriptions to conducting performance reviews.
