Vial Adaptor and its importance in closed system drug transfer device

With the increase in the number of useful medicines that can fight against several diseases

, the number and frequency of use of hazardous drugs are also increasing. These drugs are highly perilous and its exposures can badly contaminate the surroundings which in turn can adversely affect the mankind. Hence, major steps have to be taken to prevent the mankind from its fatal consequences. Different healthcare units have already published numerous safety guidelines to minimize the risks of exposures and save the living organisms from the disastrous clutches of these harmful drugs.

During handling of these harmful drugs, there are great chances of healthcare workers becoming the victims of needle- stick injuries. These needle pricks can induce innumerable short term as well as long term health defects to them. Thus a small needle prick is enough to take their lives. Hence, the major area of concern for several healthcare organizations is the designing of needle-less systems that can prevent the workers from these sorts of injuries.

A vial-adaptor is safety equipment that can be used for the transfer of medications from a vial to the needle-less syringes. The top end of this device is sealed with the help of a septum. Generally, it has got three sections. The first one is a top end, the second one is an inner cavity and the third one is a bottom end. The inner cavity is used for the reception of the vial and the bottom end is in a position so that it can extend below the bottom end of the vial. A needle is present in the body and is used for puncturing the septum of the vial.

The closed system drug transfer devices are the safety equipments that are both airtight and leak proof. These devices are doubly sealed to provide extra protection. It does not allow the exit of the harmful emissions and aerosols. Thus there are no chances of the surroundings getting contaminated. Also it does not allow the outer disinfections to enter inside the system. So it is very reliable and secure. A vial adaptor is a very important component of this safety system.
