Vickers: The Name Vickers Remained Until The Twentieth Century
Vickers, founded initially as Vickers Company in 1828
, was a British manufacturer of military equipment, traditionally based in Barrow-in-Furness. The name Vickers remained until the twentieth century, despite a series of changes and mergers. Vickers is now part of BAE Systems.
The Vickers Company was founded in Sheffield, England, as a steel foundry by Edward Vickers and his stepfather George Naylor in 1828. Naylor was a co-owner of the foundry Naylor & Sanderson and brother William owned a steel work. The new company known as Naylor Vickers and Company was quickly controlled by Edward's income from investment in railways. It soon became known, among others, for church bells. In 1854, the son of Thomas and Albert joined the company.
In 1867 it became public as the Vickers, Sons & Company and diversified: shafts of ships in 1868, propellers in 1872, forging press in 1882, screenings in 1888 and their first artillery piece in 1890. Vickers bought out the shipbuilder Barrow in Furness in 1897, with the added bonus its subsidiary the Maxim Nordenfelt Guns And Ammunitions Company (founded by Hiram Maxim and Maxim machine gun manufacturer and Nordenfelt machine gun) [1]. Vickers changed the name of Barrow for "Naval Construction Yard" and Maxim Vickers, Sons & Maxim. In 1960, the British government forced the consolidation of the aerospace industries of Great Britain. The aircraft division of Vickers merged with those of Bristol French Electric and Hunting Aircraft in the new British Aircraft Corporation. Vickers had 40 of the new company, French 40 Electric and Bristol 20 and 70 had BAC of Hunting. Supermarine Division ceased its operation in 1963 and the name was no longer used after 1965 by Vickers.
In 1977, the Act Aircraft and Shipbuilding Industries Act which nationalized LAC was absorbed by the group now known as the British Aerospace BAE Systems. The section of Vickers Shipbuilding, Vickers Armstrong Shipbuilders in 1955 and became the Vickers Shipbuilding Group Limited in 1968, was forced to merge by the same law in British Shipbuilders. However it was privatized in 1986 under the name of Vickers Shipbuilding and Engineering Ltd. (VSEL) and then bought by Marconi Marine. It is now part of BAE Systems Submarines.
