Video Editing Software User Interfaces
A significant point to take into consideration when selecting video editing software
is the user interface but it must be within the framework of the complete software package.
Computer software makes an attempt to mimic whatever function it is that you would be doing in the real world. A word processor page looks like a blank sheet of paper and a database file has a resemblance to a card archive system.
The particular issue for consumer video editing software design is that it can't mimic something which you as a consumer, are already accustomed to. Without the existence of the video editing software you wouldn't be doing this to start with!
To circumvent this most consumer video creation software attempts to follow the steps that the average person would probably take in working with a video project.
They get started usually with some function for importing your unprocessed footage into the software. After that on to editing, video special effects or filters, audio treatments and titles.
Finally we come to the rendering or generation of the project into the end video file format you want.
This is the sequence the software developers are using to form the interfaces you see. There is a logic to this layout but for some it results in other confusions.
The source of the confusion is the expectation on the part of the user that the movie editing software will operate in a manner the same as other known software programs.
One of the usual points upon which this takes place is the very simple step of saving your work. If you save in a Word document the changes you made are stored. The file itself is now rewritten to reflect the changes. Duplicate this action in video editing software and to all appearances nothing occurs.
That's because in video editing software the original video and audio files are never touched. This is the start point of the confusion. You want to save your changes but the software is designed to never change your originals for safety. The answer to this problem is project files.
A project file keeps accurate documentation of what you wish to change or plan to do. What video file, what component of the file, exactly where is that file to be found, what special effects to make use of and on it goes. It is not your actual project or any video file which is being saved after you hit the save button. What is being stored are your editing selections up to that point in time as a project file.
You only get to the point of generating the final result once you have concluded all of your editing. Some programs name it Creating, some use Rendering yet others use Sharing.
If this is the first occasion in which you have ever used video editing software then they all will appear just a little bewildering at first. It doesn't matter which you choose as you will have to come to grips with the interface before you can use it productively.
Regardless, make sure that you make full use of the free trials to thoroughly evaluate the user interface of any video editing software you are looking at. Check it out thoroughly, open and close things, fool around with it until finally it feels right... or doesn't!
