Video Games Are Not The Main Cause Of Violence

. I am speaking of the perpetual myth that violent video games result in an increased number of violent crimes committed by the youth in our society. Well, folks, the law enforcement statistics do not support this myth. Mass media is inconsistent with statistical data.

PS1 (or Play Station One) video gaming console was released by Sony in the early 1990's, with the very popular, extremely violent game, Grand Theft Auto (version 1) released shortly thereafter. According to the Bureau of Statistics for the US Department of Justice, the number of homicides committed by felons under the age of fourteen saw no discernible increase from 1976 to 2002, with the numbers per 100,000 people so low that it is next to impossible to graph. A slight decline in homicidal crimes was shown through statistics after Grand Theft Auto hit the market. Because gamers are between the ages 14-24 people believe it is certain the crime rate would increase in these age groups. Whether the crime involves murder or not, video games are blamed for them occurring.

Violent video games and crimes do not have any direct relationship to one another. Statistics by law enforcement agencies prove mass media to be false in their claims. During the decade when each of the major video game console manufacturers released their systems and gaming options that include action and action-adventure genres with violence, the violent crime statistics either remained consistent or decreased in number. So why, pray tell, is the media intent on perpetuating this myth?

Ratings are the main cause of false data being released. Each major news outlet competes for ratings against each other by garnering the largest percentage of the viewing audience. Parent's pay more attention to the news than anyone else. News channels know that the best way to get a parents attention is by insinuating that something can and will affect their children. It certainly is not based on any factual law enforcement data.

It is also important to note that the child psychology "experts" utilized to shore up this myth are relaying their professional opinions, not facts. It is important to find true data from the Bureau of Statistics to show that video games are not the direct cause of crime in the United States.
