Vigilance is the Price of Safety

Many kids and teens at some point during their high school and college years indulge

in drinking alcohol long before it is permissible for them by law to try it. A recent research conducted by a Child Welfare Association in Milwaukee, Wisconsin shows that a whopping 80% of High School students have tried alcohol. Not only experimentation with alcohol among kids is illegal, it is not safe for their health as well. Hence it's imperative for teachers and parents to initiate discussions on alcohol use and abuse with your students and kids at an early age itself. Before they start conversing on this topic they need to understand the reason why kids do this.

According to the survey which was done alongside the research, the top three reasons were found to be:

to seem cool

to know what it is like

simply as others are doing it

Every kid wishes to be cool. A majority of kids who participated in the survey told that they don't feel drinking alcohol makes them cool. And that's some good news.

It is quite uncomplicated to notice how a kid gets the incorrect message about alcohol. I bet you might have seen the beer commercials on TV where they feature people drinking beers in a pub or at a party and having a ball. How can you blame the kids if they think that beer is the king of good times?

Discuss with your students or your kids about the darker side of alcohol. Make them understand that alcohol is a depressant that slows down their brain and affect their ability to read, write, speak and think. They may even lose their poise and may face trouble in reaching home. Drinking alcohol may stimulate them initially and later make them feel relaxed and happy. But it can then lead them to a heated argument or fight or will even make them start crying for no reason. Eventually, someone who abuses alcohol can do grave destruction to their body.

These are the reasons why federal and legal authorities in this country amended laws restricting kids and teenagers below the age of twenty one in buying or using alcohol. Hey feel and sincerely hope that people above that age can make better decisions about alcohol.

If they see any of their colleagues or friends drinking, they should immediately inform their parents, teachers or student counselors as they may need support or help through counseling or medical intervention to stop his alcohol consuming habit. At times kids may find it hard to refuse to accept if someone offers them a drink. This is as they feel peer pressure. This may happen when the other kid who is offering a drink might say that drinking alcohol will make him grown up or would say it is cool. On the other hand, kids who are aware of the dangerous and harmful effects of alcohol may not feel the peer pressure and would deny if anyone offers them a drink.

Another way to avoid or prevent underage drinking is to find and indulge in other fun things. Kids should not only learn the dangers of alcohol abuse from the teachers or parents, but also from nurses and doctors, through character education classes and by interacting with those people who had been treated with alcohol problems in the past.

So, take a smart move, let your kids know about alcohol and its ill effects and make them take a better decision about their own behavior and habits. And, not to mention always keep an eye on them. As, vigilance is indeed the price you have to pay for your children's safety.

Academic instruction isn't the only responsibility teachers have in today's classrooms. More and more, teachers are being called on to teach students about values ... things like making good decisions, the showing of respect, taking responsibility, choosing friends, and having a positive attitude. It's a responsibility that could be overwhelming, considering the limited hours available in a school day, the number of kids in the classroom, and the diversity of backgrounds and personalities each child represents.

Character Education by Just Do The Right Thing" is a practical and powerful tool that equips educators to tackle values training with confidence.
