Vinay learned acting at the State University of New York at Stony Brooks

. Vinay debuted in acting as a theater actor while he was studying in New York. After he came to Mumbai, Vinay initially acted in many television serials.

He also hosted many television shows along with his friend, Ranvir Shorey, Who is also a Bollywood actor now. Vinay acting career in India started off with television serials. He acted in famous series named Hip Hip Hurray in the role of Vinny Sir.

Vinay and Ranvir Shorey together hosted a television show called Ranvir Vinay Aur Kaun on Star Plus channel. The dup also hosted the show House Arrest on channel . Duniya Goal Hai was a television series which aired during the 2006 FIFA Football World Cup, also hosted by Vinay and Ranvir.

Vinay teamed up with Ranvir, Suresh Menon and Gaurav Ghera for the Great Indian Laughter Show aired on Star One, hosted by Shekhar Suman.


Vinay first appeared on the silver screen in director Deepa Mehta path breaking film Fire (1996) in a small role of a guide at the Taj Mahal. In the film Bombay Boys (1998) directed by Kaizad Gustad, Vinay played a character of a spotboy turned director.

Har dil jo pyar karega (2000) directed by Raj Kanwar, starred Salman Khan, Rani Mukerji and Priety Zinta in lead roles. Ranvir played a supporting role of Monty in this film. After a gap of 2 years, Vinay was seen acting in Amit Saxena directed JISM (2003) starring John Abraham and Bipasha Basu in lead roles.

Vinay played a cop, DCP Siddharth in this film. Vinay was seen in many other films in brief roles including Murder unveiled (2005), Say Salaam India (2005), Raghu Romeo (2003), Deepa Mehta Water (2005) and O re manvaa (2006).

In the year 2006, Vinay landed up with relatively prominent characters in various movies like Mixed Doubles (2006) and Dibakar Banerjee directorial debut Khosla Ka Ghosla! (2006). Both these films had a sizable role for Vinay, and earned him recognition in mainstream Hindi films.

Bheja Fry (2007) and Johny Gaddar (2007) were the two films with Vinay in a central character. Directed by Sagar Ballary, Bheja Fry (2007) Had Vinay Along With Rajat Kapoor, Sarika And Ranvir Shorey In Lead Roles. Johny Gaddar (2007) was a dramatic thriller directed by Sriram Raghvan.

Vinay was starred in character of Prakash along with Dharmendra, Neil Nitin Mukesh and Rimi Sen in lead roles. Vinay was also seen in Vic Sarin Partition (2007), Subhash Kapoor Say Sallam India (2007), Buddha Mar Gaya (2007), Manorama six feet under (2007) Khoya khoya chaand (2007) and Yash raj Films Aaja nachle (2007) in supporting roles.

Mithya (2008), directed by Rajat Kapoor, was a critical and commercial hit starring Ranvir Shorey, Neha Dhupia, Naseeruddin Shah, Saurabh Shukla along with Vinay. Vinay also produced DASVIDANIYA (2008) and also acted in a lead role for this film.

It was a story of a common man saying goodbye to the world in his own way, after being diagnosed of stomach cancer. The film was critically acclaimed, and was a moderate commercial success at the Box Office. Vinay also played the character of Bobby Khosla in Aditya Chopra directorial comeback Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi (2008).

His other films for the year include via darjeeling (2008) and OH, MY GOD (2008). In the year 2009, vinay was seen in a lead role in straight (2009) opposite gul panag. the film got mixed reviews from the critics and a moderate response at the box office.

Vinay was also a part of ensemble starcast of laugh riot Quick Gun Murugan (2009), with Dr. Rajendra Prasad, Sandhya Mridul and Nassar in lead roles. Vinay was next seen in a small character of Jitesh, a motel owner in Karan Johar My Name Is Khan, starring Shahrukh Khan and Kajol in lead roles.

Ek Tho Chance (2009) and Raat Gayi Baat Gayi (2009) were Vinay other films for 2009. Vinay played the character of Madhukar Shahi in Sushil Rajpal film Antardwand (2010). The film, which is based on Indian arranged marriage and the situations surrounding it, was applauded by critics.


Though it could not survive at the Box office, the film bagged a National Film Award for being the Best Film on Social issues. Vinay was next seen Akshay Shere film The Fiulm Emotional Atyachar (2010). The film starred Ravi Kishan, Mohit Ahalawat, Ranvir Shorey and Kalki Koelchin along with Vinay.

Vinay will be seen acting next in Mumbai Cutting (2010) which will be a narrative on Mumbai life. Vinay would be the part of the Parcel segment, directed by Revathy. He would also be seen acting in Sagar Ballary Kaccha Limbu (2010) opposite Sarika in lead role.

Tere Mere Phere (2010) is a comedy revolving around a marriage, directed by Deepa Sahi. Vinay would be seen in a lead role opposite Riya Sen in this film. Vinay is originally from Paschim Vihar in New Delhi. Vinay is a divorcee and has two daughters, Vasudha and Sharinee with his exwife, Sonika Sahay. Vinay and Sonika got a divorce in 2008 with mutual consent.
