As professional trend forecasters and stylists we have been watching the trend for all things vintage for some time now. There are no signs of this trend diminishing and vintage, recycling and make-do-and mend' are particularly appropriate in times of austerity.

Our desire for nostalgia, simple pleasures and childhood memories are a counter balance to our hyper fast world. Note the popularity of gardening, home baking and traditional foods.

The familiar and nostalgic are impacting all areas of design from fashion and interiors to graphic typefaces and magazine photography.

Romantic focus. This month we look at the impact of the vintage trend on the wedding industry:

Lavish ostentation has given way to vintage glamour and more personalised and intimate wedding events. Afternoon tea parties with vintage crockery, bunting and cupcakes are replacing the stuffy formality of a sit down wedding breakfasts as couple opt for vintage weddings and a less expensive and more individual approach to their big day.

Having studied the 2011 catwalks, vintage couture and lace will continue to be a major influence going forward. Designers such as John Galliano, Carolina Herrera and Vera Wang are renowned for their re-interpretations of past eras for stunning dresses, tiaras and accessories.

Key vintage wedding trends:

Texture: lace, tiered flounces, 3D flowers and waterfall ruffles on dresses.

Colour: brighter colours such as cobalt blue plus faded vintage pastels.

Themes: Retro Hollywood glamour or English garden party elegance.

Entertaining: Vintage mismatched crockery, comfort food and traditional tea parties

Venue: Informal outdoor and green' weddings tents and glamping' (posh camping)

DIY weddings: handmade invites and personalised touches

Flowers: Old fashioned flowers such as traditional old English roses

Accessories: Vintage tiaras and circlets incorporating heirloom jewellery.

Retro bars: real ale, old fashioned sweet shops, tea bars or personalised cocktails.
