Vintage and Classic Damask WeddingsFavors and Others
Common as it may be today, history defines Damask patterns as the linens of royalty. Damask is one of the basic weaving techniques founded by the Byzantine and Islamic weaving centers of the Middle Ages and is believed to have derived it's name from Damascus, Syria.
During the Second Crusade, weavers were brought into Italy to reproduce this fine pattern. In the 1600's weavers were producing fine linens in Belgium and the Netherlands. By the 1700's Damask was being produced also in France. Linens with the Damask pattern at this time was only being used by well-to-do and aristocrat Europeans and Americans. Ireland, Italy and France are now the countries where the finest damask is produced.
In 1926, etiquette expert Emilie Post stated, "No other table covering, no matter how fine or elaborate, satisfies our inherent sense of faultless suitability."
