Remove the trim. Gently pry the trim piece away from the wall with a flat tool or slide a shim along the under side near the nail to increase the pressure and make pulling it off easier. Avoid damaging the surrounding trim and vinyl siding.

Make needed underlying repairs. If the wood is rotted behind the trim piece you might have more of a repair project going than you thought. Replace structural wood as needed. Patch any holes in the house wrap or building paper.

Match the trim. Replace the original trim piece with a color matched trim. If your vinyl siding is new, the trim color may be fade resistant, but older vinyl siding products were sometimes susceptible to fading. Pick a shade lighter if this is the case.

Nail the trim in place. Use rust-resistant nails. Remember not to drive them completely, vinyl needs expansion room.

Do not caulk the new trim. For a wood home, a good caulk job seals the deal and protects your home from insect invasions and water damage. Vinyl siding relies upon the housewrap, and caulking can trap in unwanted moisture.

Replacing trim is a fairly easy project that any homeowner can do. Plan ahead so that when you remove the old vinyl siding trim, the exposed area isn't going to get wet. Everything you need for trim repair is available at most home improvement stores.
