, have become a significant part of the architecture of any project that is desired to be efficient, cost-effective, less time-consuming and simple. However, before getting into the details of the various kinds of virtualization services, lets us first get a clear concept of what virtualization is all about. Virtualization means creation of something virtual but having the effects of its real version. In technological terms it is defined as adding another collateral layer to the already existing interface between different components of an infrastructure like the server, the network, storage, software or even an entire system.

Now let us take a look at the different types of virtual services that are very commonly employed in the various projects. You must have heard about the virtual memory of a computer. It is a construct with which the user of a computer gets the impression that he is using a memory larger than the actual size of the RAM. It makes use of the page replacement technique and saves a lot of storage space. This is nothing but storage virtualization. You also must be aware of the feature "connect to a remote desktop" available in PCs. It enables a system to access another system present in a different geographical area through its IP address. The person at the end of the accessing computer gets the feel of working with the accessed computer via the screen shots sent from the latter. This is again nothing but system virtualization. It reduces project duration.

Software virtualization involves creation of a virtual interface between the software and the environment it is working on with the use of a Virtual Machine. JVM or the Java Virtual Machine became famous in the 90s because they were able to inculcate this idea in their product in a very efficient manner. It makes the software environment-independent thus making, writing of codes, a job to be done only ones. One common application is when you are trying to open a windows application while working in a different OS, say for example Fedora. The virtual drive in the system creates an interface between the two, thus making the job easy and less tedious. Something similar is done by the makers of OSI (Open Systems Interconnection) that makes an attempt to create a common standard of network.

A large network generally supports many network protocol suits and different devices can interact with each other only if they share the same protocol, thus preventing interoperability of devices. Hence came up the concept of network virtualization that virtualizes the physical layer of the network with the web services.

At last we come to the service virtualization that simply interfaces the various components of the infrastructure of the project by being present at and between each layer of abstraction and providing services to the environing layers. When the number of services increases, cost of ownership and management of these services also increase. However, all the services do not have the same characteristics. Some are used more, some less. Some demand more security, others don't. So for effective management of these services, keeping duration of a project cycle minimum and the process, cost-effective, service virtualization is coined as the most crucial.
