Resource Planning and Good Management
The "Heroic Era of Antarctic Exploration"
On December 14, 1911 Roald Amundsen and his team became the first people to reach the South Pole, beating the famous explorer and scientist Robert Scott by 33 days. For those unfamiliar with the race to the South Pole, by all accounts Scott was expected to win and bring the triumph to Britain, but was beaten by the surprising and somewhat last minute decision by Amundsen to launch an expedition to the pole. Although Scott eventually did make it to the pole more than a month later, his party suffered tragedy on the return trip and perished in a blizzard.
One of the most interesting aspects of the two competing expeditions is the vast differences in the equipment and techniques that were used. Roald Amundsen relied on proven methods of skis and sleds and was very particular in his choice of equipment, whereas Robert Scott employed huge supply teams and modern machines.
The differences were striking: Amundsen relied on skis, dog teams, fur coats and traditional equipment that you might expect from 19th and early 20th century explorers. On the other hand, Scott wore woolen and windproof clothing and mostly used man-hauled sleds, motorized track vehicles, and ponies, rather than relying on teams of dogs. Also of note is that Scott spent seven times as much on his motor sleds than on the other forms of transportation combined, and all three motor sleds were lost or abandoned due to mechanical failures very early in the expedition.
Amundsen's team won, travelling to the pole and back in 99 days. Scott left only 11 days after Amundsen, but his expedition suffered a series of setbacks and tragedy, including eating many of the ponies, and ended with the death of the last expedition members approximately 150 days later, without completing the return trip home.
Amundsen attributed his success to superior planning and preparation, saying:
"I may say that this is the greatest factor -- the way in which the expedition is equipped -- the way in which every difficulty is foreseen, and precautions taken for meeting or avoiding it. Victory awaits him who has everything in order -- luck, people call it. Defeat is certain for him who has neglected to take the necessary precautions in time; this is called bad luck."
(from The South Pole, by Roald Amundsen)
Technology and Resource Management
Jumping ahead 100 years
In this same light, businesses need solutions that work, that are reliable, and that can help them accomplish goals without undue expense or effort. In some sense, the specific underlying technology is less important that the overall function and features of the solutions. In other words, it does not matter so much whether it uses "dog sleds" or "ponies," as much as it matters that it can get you where you need to go, and meet all speed, functionality and reliability requirements.
In this case, Amundsen was able to plan a solution that could reliably meet his needs, and return him safely to his destination. Scott depended on new and generally unproven methods, and did not plan appropriately to support his solution. This left Scott's team weak and malnourished before a blizzard overtook the remainder of his group, killing them.
But regardless of the solution, businesses need to be able to inject their own preferences, creativity, and brand into the technology, much like Roald Admudsen injected his persistence and perseverance into well proven technologies and systems and created a world first achievement.
Part of resource management means planning for potential difficulties, using foresight to anticipate likely and possible challenges, and planning ahead to meet goals on time and under budget.
With technology this can be challenging as the cost of hiring IT professionals and custom programmers becomes prohibitive for smaller organizations. This makes it more difficult for small organizations to plan appropriately because there are many factors that prohibit their mobility and agility when it comes to integrating new technologies that could help take their business to the next level.
The Amadeus Consulting Method
At Amadeus Consulting, we create custom technology solutions that are designed to meet the diverse needs of our clients. For us, custom technology means using the absolute best technology for the situation. Our clients appreciate this approach because they get products that exceed their expectations, and that are able to do something new or offer a benefit that no other program does.
The need for semi-custom solutions that are based on proven technologies is part of the reason that Amadeus Consulting recently launched its new service called Virtuoso Website Builder and Support. We wanted to give small businesses the ability to use Amadeus Consulting's enterprise site development team, but with costs and features that fit small businesses.

Virtuoso is a custom website package that allows companies to launch enterprise level websites that have the appearance and function of custom websites, but run on standard proven platforms. This creates sites with power and capability, but also at lower costs than fully custom sites.
In some ways Virtuoso is very similar to Amundsen's expedition. It plans for future contingencies, it combines proven technologies with a touch of personal flavor, it can help businesses reach new levels, and it doesn't require huge amounts of funding to get started. In fact, it is priced at approximately one-half to one-third the annual cost of hiring a full-time web manager.
With Virtuoso, all of the framework has already been built and fully tested, but is just waiting for your input so that our team can put the finishing touches on it, and make it into exactly what you need.
This gives a company access to expert graphical design, IT, SEO, and programming staff, without needing to hire them yourself. In other words, it gives small businesses the technical capacity and support that large corporations have in terms of building an effective web presence, but at a much lower cost.
In addition to helping create and launch a high quality site for your business, included in Virtuoso is a monthly support fee which covers all of your hosting, IT and support needs, as well as an annual creative refresh to update the look and feel of the site, if requested.
This provides an immense benefit to any company that is looking to expand its business through the web, especially because each site comes with built-in analytics and intelligence software to help you make the most of your site and further build your presence on the web.
It does not take a huge investment or large internal staff to employ the best technologies to get your site up and running. Virtuoso can get your business website up and running, and help you discover new frontiers.
