It is located on the banks of the River Lehigh and is around 97 km north of Philadelphia and just 140 km from New York City.

The area which is now known as the Allentown was founded by the William Allen in the year 1762.William Allen was a rich ship merchant and the former mayor of Philadelphia city.The original town plan consists of forty-two city blocks and 756 lots.This plan is now under the jurisdiction of Historical Society of Pennsylvania.Most of the streets of the town were named after the children of Allen.

The then area was formally named as 'Allentown' on April 16, 1838 and on March 12, 1867 it got the status of the city.

The city got historical significance as it is the place where the Liberty Bell was hidden during the American Revolutionary War from the British.This place was also used for keeping the prisoners of war after the Battle of Trenton on December 26, 1776.
