A trip to Charlotte in the winter months gives you and your family access to a variety of community festivals
. Here are some top choices to help you plan your activities.
Lasting a full six weekends from the end of October into November is the Renaissance Festival and Artisan Marketplace. This music, art and entertainment festival combines interactive, outdoor theater performances, an arts and craft marketplace featuring more than 100 vendors, plus jousting tournaments, medieval rides and games, a circus, and plenty of feasting opportunities--all executed 16th century renaissance style. The festival is held on Popular Tent Road in Huntersville, about 5 miles north of Charlotte, off Interstate 85. Drop by for some great family fun.
The Charlotte International Auto Show, held at Charlotte Convention Center in November each year, is part of Charlotte's NASCAR heritage, drawing car lovers from all over the world. The 280,0000 square feet of exhibition space promise plenty for car enthusiasts--whether it is the latest car models showcase by car manufacturers, or the latest technology for super cars.
A newcomer to Charlotte's winter festival scene is the Annual Winter Film Festival at the US National Whitewater Center. For 2010, the film festival's second year, the Subaru and Charlotte Ski and Snowboard Club presented two action-packed ski movies.
The Beaujolais Festival is held at the Levine Museum of the New South every November. This is a 17-year tradition in Charlotte, paying tribute to Charlotte's wine-producing activities. This festival traces its roots back to French vineyards that would celebrate the first grape harvest (les premiere vendages). Attendees typically enjoy wine-tasting, live jazz performances, and a silent auction.
In December, Charlotte offers light-ups and musical concerts southern style, starting with the 43rd annual Southern Christmas Show. This event features food, arts and crafts, gifts, and decorative pieces held at The Park. The Singing Christmas Tree choir performs too, with festive songs and some foot tapping rock numbers.
Visitors can also skate the night away at WBT's Holiday on Ice, Charlotte's huge outdoor skating rink at the Green, which is open until January.
Down at the Charlotte Motor Speedway, thousands of LED lights line a 2.5 mile drive-through light park. The North Carolina Christmas light up will be on until January 2011. There are carnival rides for children and an ice-skating rink.
First Night Charlotte, a child-friendly New Year eve celebration, caters to families seeking a safe and fun way to usher in the New Year, sans alcohol. Events for children start as early as 3pm on New Year's Eve. Before the actual countdown, there are live music and performances, dancing, and food. This is a Charlotte-wide event, held at different destinations and culminating in the annual New Year's Eve people parade.
The Queen's Winter Feast is a part of the Charlotte restaurant-week extravaganza, offering diners the rare opportunity to savor sumptuous meals in 79 upscale Charlotte restaurants. There are two feasts per year; the winter feast is usually held in January while the summer feast occurs in July. Reservations are necessary.
