Visit Gonbad E Qabus During Your Tour To Iran

Gonbad-e Qabus is a famous tower situated in the central part of the town

, which is also named after the place. The city is a part of Golestan province lying in the north-east of Iran. Turkmen have mostly dominated the area and live together with other ethnic groups. Many fans of architecture from different countries visit the town during their tour to Iran to see its historic brick tower.

Structure of Gonbad e Qabus Tower

The tower was constructed at the central part of the city with a height of 72 meters or 236 feet including the platform. Some other historical brick monuments like St. Martin's Church in Landshut, Germany; Church of Our Lady, Bruges, Belgium; minaret of Jam in Afghanistan; and Qutb Minar in Delhi, India, surpass the tower in height. But the Gonbad-e Qabus is made from pure-baked-bricks which distinguish it as the tallest pure-brick tower in the world.

Scientific Design of the Tower

Originally, the tower was constructed as a huge decagon building covered with a conic roof forming the ratio of 1.618 which equals the sacred Phi. Visitors enjoy the interior of the tower which displays some of the earliest designs of Muqarnas decorative styles.

The decagonal structure contains a wall with 3 meters width dividing the structure into 10 sides. Today's visitors are astonished to see the scientific and architectural design built at the front of the Gonbad-e Qabus . You can hear the echo of your voice when saying something at an external structure, which is a part of the original design.

History

The pure-brick tower was constructed in 1006 AD based on an order issued by Ziyarid Amir Shams ol-Ma'ali Qabus ibn Wushmgir. So the history of the monument dates back to more than 1000 years ago when it was built 3 km north of the ancient city of Jorjan, which was ruled by the Ziyarid dynasty.

History of the structure can be established from a Kufic inscription placed at the bottom of the tower. Some rumors further suggest that the Gonbad-e Qabus was built with the original intention of being the tomb of a Ziyarid ruler. Most visitors include the tower in their itinerary during their tour of Iran.
