Visit Imam Khomeini Mosque in Downtown Tehran
Imam Khomeini Mosque was built in Qajar era and is one of the sites visited by tourists when they visit Tehran. It was originally known as Shah's mosque, but the name was changed after 1979 revolution. Constructed during the reign of Fath Ali Shah Qajar, it dates back to 1824. Parts of it were built when Nasir od-din Shah came to the throne. Among them are the two minarets which far exceed the portal of the mosque in height.
The structure is famous for its tile work which you can see throughout the mosque. The complex which houses the mosque also has a huge courtyard, a beautiful cupola, magnificent prayer halls, chambers, false arches and a portal. The decoration in these structures is very much in adherence to Qajar style.
Description of Imam Khomeini Mosque
Reconstruction work on this mosque has changed the look of many of the structures here. The main cupola now looks more like a wishbone after being repaired and remodeled. One of the prayer halls is very large and has an old inscription on the tile work.
You can read a well composed ode here when you visit Tehran, which describes the beauty of the edifice. This ode was written by the well known poet Mejmar. Like most other mosques in Iran, this too is a work of art.
Location of the Mosque
Also known as the Sultani mosque, the Imam Khomeini Mosque can be seen when you come to one end of the Naser Khosrow avenue just next to the famous Tehran Bazaar. You can notice the beautiful structures which were built under the various rulers of the Qajar dynasty and if you see closely, you can find a difference in the style of architecture. You cannot visit Tehran and miss seeing the large expanse of the courtyard and the well decorated Shabestans here.
Busy Place
It will be very difficult for you to find a place to stand near this mosque, during the busy hours of the day. People flock to the mosque quite regularly even today and you can see many Muslims prayers here.
Reminiscent of the 18th century architecture, the mosque is an interesting part of the history and Islamic culture in Iran. There are several entrances to the structure and the mosque is usually crowded by Muslims offering their prayers here.
