Mussoorie: It is a popular tourist destination for honeymooners because of its cool climes and beautiful natural environment. It is located about 34 km from Dehradun in Uttarakhand. This hill station, situated in the foothills of the Himalaya ranges, is also known as the Queen of the Hills. It is situated at an altitude of 1,825 metres (5,990 ft) well equipped with green hills, flora and fauna. It is a fascinating hill resort. It consists snow ranges to the northeast, and glittering views of the Doon Valley and Shivalik ranges in the south. This enchanting hill town used to showcase a 'fairyland' atmosphere to the tourists. Captain Young, a British military officer and Mr. Shore, the resident Superintendent of Dehradun explored this famous hill resort in 1826.The highest point in Mussoorie is Lal Tibba with a height of over 2,290 metres (7,510 ft) is a lovely lookout point, a short distance from the actual peak. The Mall is one of the most happening places in Mussoorie that stretches from Picture Palace at its eastern end to the Public Library at its western end. It is called the "Gateway" to Yamunotri and Gangotri Shrines. The best time to visit is from mid-March to mid-November though the downpours could be an inhibiting factor in the monsoon months of July to September.

Mussoorie suffers from over-development given its proximity to Delhi, Ambala and Chandigarh. It has serious problems of garbage collection, water scarcity and parking shortages during tourist season in summer.

Mussoorie: How to Reach?

Mussoorie is conveniently connected by road to Delhi and major cities. The closest railway station is Dehradun. Taxis are easily available and there are buses at regular intervals.

Mussoorie has a great nature walk known as "Camel's Back Road" since it has a rocky outcrop in the shape of a camel's hump. There is a beautiful cemetery along the road that is located mid-way on the loop. The "Gun Hill" point is the second highest point of Mussoorie, at an altitude of 2124 meters, is the place where a cannon used to fire midday. It is accessible by the cable car on the Mall road. There is an oldest Christian church in the Himalayas, St Mary's that is situated above Mall Road. Kempty falls is a popular picnic spot. Lal Tibba and Company Garden is tourist destinations. Happy Valley has a small Tibetan temple. This was the first Tibetan temple in India that was built by Tibetan refugees in 1960. Dhanaulti, a beautiful place is located about 32 kilometers from Mussoorie.

Lake Mist: It is located about 5 km before Kempty falls on the Mussoorie-Kempty road. This is a picnic spot in the lap of nature through which The Kempty River flows in which you may enjoy boating. It has beautiful waterfalls also.

Company Garden: This is a beautiful garden and an artificial mini lake with paddled boating facility. This picnic spot is located at a distance of 4 km by rickshaw cycles, pony or car.

Mussoorie Lake: It is the latest developed picnic spot that is situated at a distance of 6 kms on Mussoorie-Dehradun road with pedaled boats facility. It offers great view of Doon Valley and hill villages. It offers exciting views during night.

Childer's Lodge: It is also known as "Nahata Estate". It is a huge property of approximately 300 acres, owned by the Harakh Chand Nahata family. This is the highest peak of Mussoorie near Lal Tibba. You may enjoy the view of snow-clad mountains from this point.

Bhatta Falls: It is situated 7 km from Mussoorie on Mussoorie-Dehradun Road near Bhatta Village. It is fall with different ponds for bathing and water amusements that are ideal place for picnic. It is smaller than the Kempty Falls but equally beautiful.

Jharipani Fall: It is located at 8 km from Mussoorie on Mussoorie-Jharipani road. You may visit this place by local bus or car up to Jharipani from where the fall is about 1.5 km on foot.

Mossy fall: It is situated 7 kms from Mussoorie that is surrounded by a dense forest. One can go there via Barlowganj or Balahisar.

Sir George Everest's House: It is The Park Estate is where you can find the remains of the building and laboratory of Sir George Everest, the Surveyor-General of India from 1830 to 1843. The world's highest peak Mt. Everest is named after him. It is located 6 km from Library Bazaar and a wonderful walk from there that is accessible by road although the road is rough beyond Haathi Paon. You may enjoy amazing view of Doon Valley and Aglar River valley. It is a wonderful walk from Library Bazaar and a beautiful spot for a picnic.

Cloud's End: It was the bungalow built by a British in 1830. It is one of the oldest buildings of Mussoorie. It is located at the edge of a cliff, with a sheer drop, which gives the house an impression of being at the end of the clouds, hence the name. The bungalow has been converted into a hotel called Cloud's End that is one of the heritage hotels. The resort is located at a distance of 8 kms from the Library and surrounded by dense forests. It offers impressive view of the snow-covered Himalayan peaks and the Yamuna River flowing through the Doon Valley.

Gun Hill: It is the second highest peak of Mussoorie that overlooks the Bunderpunch, Srikantha, Pithwara and Gangotri ranges of The Himalaya. You may view a number of viewing points through a telescope that is set up on the hill with small fees. It can be reached by road and the Ropeway ride. It is at a distance of 400 meters and provides spectacular view of the hill ranges.

Happy Valley: The Dalai Lama established the Tibetan Government in Exile in Mussoorie in 1959, having fled Chinese occupation of Tibet. The Government of Tibet in exile eventually moved to Dharamsala in Himachal Pradesh. The first Tibetan school was established in Mussoorie in 1960. Tibetans settled mainly in Happy Valley in Mussoorie. At present there are around 5,000 Tibetans in Mussoorie.

Landour Bazaar: This is the oldest bazaar of Mussoorie around 150 years old and served as a recreation place for British soldiers. It is not as lively as the Kulri bazaar. The mile-long bazaar has several silversmiths known for silver nose rings, earrings, bracelets and anklets etc.

Vinog Mountain Quail Sanctuary: This is a bird sanctuary established in 1993. Spread over an area of 339 hectares and lies 11 kms from the Library Point. It is famous for the Mountain Quail, a bird species thought to be extinct and last spotted in 1876.


Nag Devta Temple: An ancient temple dedicated to Lord Shiva and is situated on Cart Mackenzie Road about 6 km from Mussoorie on the way to Dehradun. It is easily accessible by road. It provides excellent view of Mussoorie and the Doon Valley. It is a popular temple for locals and domestic tourists.

Jwalaji Temple (Benog Hill): It is at an altitude of 2240 meters. It is situated on the top of Benog Tibba (Hill) and contains an ancient idol of Goddess Durga. You may enjoy marvelous view of the Aglar River valley. It is not accessible by road.

Dhanolti: It is located 24 kms from Mussoorie on the Mussoorie-Tehri Road. You may enjoy nature at its best in Dhanolti. You may go for long walks in the wooded hills, enjoy a breathtaking view of the hills and plains.

Precaution: It is advisable to visit the waterfalls during the summer. You should take extra care while visiting in the monsoon as you may find leeches, slippery stone surfaces etc.
