. Years after in 1850, San Jose was incorporated, officially became a town and served as California's first state capital. San Jose, or 'Saint Joseph' directly translated from Spanish, is renowned in the Catholic Church as the patron of immigrants, workers and fathers. San Jose is the tenth largest community in the USA and the third largest city in California with just over 1 million residents living in the city core. While the core city area of San Jose holds just over 1 million residents, the surrounding metropolitan area is home to approximately 7.5 million people. Perhaps San Jose's number one claim to fame in recent years is becoming known as 'The capital of Silicon Valley", which is quite possibly one of the biggest hubs for technology related companies in the world.

The population density of San Jose is approximately 5,000 people per square mile. Per square mile, San Jose's housing density is 1,600 with something like 280,000 homes and apartments within the city limits. In these homes it was noted that for thirty-eight percent of them there were children under the age of 18 listed as occupants with an average household size of 3.6.

The two largest demographics in San Jose are: below 18, and age 25-44. Twenty-six percent of the population is made up of residents under the age of 18 and thirty-five percent of the population falls into the age 25-44 segment. Caucasian Americans make up for 49 percent of San Jose's population with a large populace of Hispanic and Asian people as well at 31 percent.

Geographical Information

One of the biggest geological characteristics near the city is the San Andreas Fault which is the cause of many earthquakes in California. One of the most destructive earthquakes to hit San Jose was in 1906 destroying much of San Jose's infrastructure. The Guadalupe River is one more geological feature of the city. Its source is in the Santa Cruz Mountains and then merges with the San Francisco Bay.

Weather

The climate in the San Jose area could be labeled as a Mediterranean climate. Unlike San Francisco, San Jose is surrounded by mountains on three sides and is inland. A semi-arid desert is created due to the mountains surrounding San Jose that also serve as a obstacle for smog originating from San Francisco.

San Jose encounters limited amounts of annual rainfall but averages over 300 days of sun annually. Due to the massive amounts of sun, the average temperature is 59 degrees Fahrenheit with a record being set in 2006 at 112 degrees Fahrenheit. Snow is certainly a rarity in San Jose with the occasional temporary dusting on nearby mountain ranges lasting a few days. The last time snow stayed on the ground in the actual city itself, was on February 5, 1976 when the city recorded snowfall of more than 3 inches.
