Visit Sheikh Lotfollah Mosque during Your Trip to Isfahan

A trip to Isfahan is a must when you are admiring the marvels of the grand Persian architecture

. Among many significant sights you will see here is Sheikh Lotfollah Mosque. Constructed during the Safavid era, the grand monument speaks a thousand words about the excellent craftsmanship of this era.

Situated to the east of the famous Nagsh-e-Jahan Square in Isfahan, it is slightly dwarfed by the other huge mosques in the place. But the exquisite artistry is evident even when you enter the mosque and you will be greatly awed by the intricate tile work on the gate and the dome.

Part of the Rich Culture

Sheikh Lotfollah Mosque is a fine example of the importance given to art and culture during the reign of the Safavid dynasty. It occupies a prime place in Isfahan, which was the flourishing capital of Persia in 16th century. The mosque was built by the orders of Shah Abbas I during Safavid era.

The credit for the architecture of this monument goes to Muhammad Reza ibn Ustad Hosein Banna Isfahani, called the "mimar" of the building. It took about 20 years for the mosque to finally look like what it is today. Shah Abbas named the mosque after his father-in-law who was a well-known preacher at his time.

Beautiful Artwork

You cannot miss seeing the mosaic work on your trip to Isfahan, which is very evident in this beautiful mosque. Depending on the lighting on the dome, you will sometimes find the tile work pink and at other times cream. A dazzling and colorful peacock-like motif is resplendent under the dome which vanishes when you go the center of the dome. The rays of light add color and beauty to the tail of the peacock which looks different at different times of the day. You can even predict the time of the day by the lighting and shade of the tail.

Religious Monument

Sheikh Lotfollah Mosque was a witness to several prayer and lecture sessions during the rule of the Safavid dynasty. Your tour of Iran is incomplete without taking a look at this splendid monument in the heart of the country. It is a must-see on your trip to Isfahan.
