Visit The Waverly Hills Sanatorium For Supernatural Encounters In Louisville

For an out of the ordinary tourist experience in Louisville

, Kentucky, be sure to tour the Waverly Hills Sanatorium. Known for its morbid past, and as the present day scene of ghostly activity, it's a popular haunt for paranormal investigators. If you're looking for a comfortable hotel in which to relax and calm your nerves after an eerie experience, try the SpringHill Suites by Marriott, a short drive from Waverly Hills in downtown Louisville.

From 1926 to 1961 Waverly Hills functioned as a hospital for people suffering from tuberculosis, also known as 'White Plague'. The swamps of Jefferson country were a perfect breeding ground for TB bacteria and the disease reached epidemic proportions. The hill top site of the sanitarium was chosen to isolate TB patients from the general public and to allow them to recover in a peaceful setting. In a time before antibiotics, some of the treatments for advanced TB could be considered gruesome by today's standards.

Waverly Hills is renowned as one of the most haunted places in America. It has been featured on several television documentary shows exploring the unknown including Scariest Places on Earth, Celebrity Paranormal Project, Ghost Hunters and, of course, Most Haunted. Paranormal investigators frequently visit the site with infra-red cameras. Many of them have captured intriguing ghostly images on film and video.

The 2005 horror movie 'Death Tunnel' was set in Waverly Hills, with much of the action taking place in its Body Chute. When death rates at the sanatorium rose during the height of the epidemic, doctors thought patients should be shielded from the sight of so many corpses being taken away. A tunnel had been built into the hillside for the purpose of bringing supplies into the hospital. It began to be used for disposing of bodies. The dead were moved through the tunnel to the bottom of the hill in a cart attached to a rail system.

The public can visit Waverly Hills by reserving a place on one of its two-hour guided tours. Four hour or all night paranormal investigations can also be booked. Private groups can arrange to have the building to themselves for overnight ghost hunts.

SpringHill Suites by Marriott is conveniently located near the shopping, dining and entertainment district of downtown Louisville. It is a short drive from many of the cities tourist attractions. The spacious king or double queen suites are supplied with a mini-refrigerator and microwave. Amenities include a complementary breakfast buffet, fitness center and heated indoor swimming pool.

For a truly memorable experience, plan a weekend break or vacation in Jefferson County and make a tour of the Waverly Hills Sanatorium the highlight of your trip. Reserve a suite at the SpringHill Suites by Marriott in downtown Louisville to ensure that you'll rest in peace.
