Visit the Guimar Pyramids on your Tenerife holiday
Your holiday to Tenerife in the Canary Islands would not be complete with a visit to Guimar an authentic Tenerife community
. Located on the border between the green north and the dry south, Guimar was a place of importance to the native Guanches for first began to settle here.
The Piramides have been carefully reconstructed to what is believed to have been their original layout and visitors can walk round and view the pyramids [although no climbing is allowed]. Fortunately, the Norwegian scientist Thor Heyerdahl [who lived in Tenerife until his death in 2002] and the ship owner Fred Olsen persuaded the authorities to seal off the area and founded the Parque Etnografico museum. It was Thor who first studied the pyramids during the 1990s and discovered that structured were laid out in such a manner that they point to the location of the sun during the summer and winter solstices. There were large steps, with a smaller staircase which lead to a ceremonial platform at the top.
What else is in Guimar? You will find a couple of interesting churches including the Basilics de Candelaria [considered to be the holiest site in the Canary Islands], and a small museum.
Location: About 23km southwest of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, and 3km inland from the coastal road.
