Visiting And Staying Near The Spanish Steps In Rome

If you are coming to Rome as a visitor for the first time

, or even if you are a frequent traveller to the city, then no doubt you will visit the Spanish Steps at some point during your stay. Located in the centre of both the historic area and shopping district, the location near the Spanish Steps is ideal as a base for touring the city. Most sights can easily be reached on foot, and for those further afield, there is a selection of stations available to choose from (Spagna, Barberini).

The Spanish Steps, or Scalinata della Trinita' dei Monti as they are called in Italian, were built in 1723-1725 by architect Francesco de Sanctis. The 138-step staircase were commissioned in order to create easy access between Palazzo Monaldeschi, home of the Embassy of Spain and the Church of Trinita' dei Monti, which dominates the top of the square above the steps. It was a unique design and at its time a very daring architectural feat, as it comprises of ramps and stairs which intersect and open out like a fan.

The square where the Spanish Steps leads from, namely Piazza di Spagna, is also home to some other tourist attractions. Notably, at the base you will find the Barcaccia Fountain, which was created by Pietro Bernini and his son Gian Lorenzo, which symbolises a sinking ship as a homage to the historic flood of the River Tiber n 1598. Just off the steps is the Keats-Shelley Memorial House and the Babington's Tea Rooms. Two of the streets that meet at the square, Via Borgognona and Via del Babuino. are where you will find the city's most swanky and trendy designer boutiques.

There are several opportunities to stay in the Spanish Steps vicinity, thanks to several establishments offering affordable and good quality accommodation in the area. If you are lucky, you may even get a panoramic view of the Spanish Steps form your room. When looking for a hotel in any part of Rome, it is advisable that your bedroom has air conditioning or at least a fan, as the Summer nights can be humid and sticky. In and around the Spanish Steps there is a good assortment of establishments, ranging from small bed and breakfasts or pensions to the more exclusive 4 or 5 star hotels.
