Visiting Castilla-la Mancha

The name of this autonomous region of Central Spain immediately brings to mind Don Quijote

, The Man from La Mancha and Manchego cheese, of course, with its hard rind and creamy taste. It also has the world's biggest vineyard and produces some of the best wine in all of Spain.

Toledo and Consuegra

You can visit Toledo, the former capital of Spain and wander its cobbled streets, visit the home of El Greco, the famous painter born in Greece and gaze in wonder at the buildings erected by the three civilizations that have left their mark. In the town of Consuegra, you can see the windmills that play such an important part in the fantasy of Don Quijote. There are eleven of these huge monsters and one of them still has the machinery from the 16th century. You would not want to miss Dulcinea's House in Toboso, a little village that bears the name of the home village of Don Quijote's love. Dulcinea's House is a museum with period antiques that would have been used in such a house.

Cuenca

The town of Cuenca in the province of Cuenca is another place that you will not want to miss in Castilla-La Mancha. You can visit the Gothic cathedral and the Spanish Museum of Abstract Art which has more than 700 works by Spanish artists. It is housed in one of the Casas Colgadas or Hanging Houses, a collection of three houses that are emblematic of Cuenca.

Guadalajara

Guadalajara is not as famous as the other cities in Castilla-La Mancha but there are several sites that you will not want to miss. One of these is the bridge over the Henares river. This is an old bridge that has survived wars, especially the Civil War, when Guadalajara was severely damaged. It is now a tourist attraction and a wonderful example of medieval bridge construction. The Santa Maria La Mayor church is another place to visit. Constructed over an old Moorish mosque, it has gone through many renovations and is a prime example of church construction from the 16th century onwards.

Hiking

If you prefer hiking to visiting old monuments, then Castilla-La Mancha is just the place for you. It has lush old forests, waterfalls, gorges and mountains that just invite you to climb and look at the wonderful scenery. It is just the place for enjoying the clean mountain air and admiring the beauty of the place.
