Visiting Ghirardelli Square And Fisherman's Wharf

San Francisco is a very large city. It is a very large mix of varying cultures and peoples.
As a result, there are a lot of things to do. One of the most fun and rewarding places to visit is Ghirardelli Square.
Ghirardelli Square is the home for the production of Ghirardelli Chocolate. It is located near Fisherman's Wharf.
The square used to have over 40 shops and restaurant featuring their delicious varieties of chocolate. While only a few of these original stores exist today, the atmosphere of Ghirardelli Square is very relaxing and a great place to hang out with friends.
Musicians are often invited to perform in this square during the evenings. Right now, the square is under renovation, but they still manage to keep it enjoyable for visitors.
This square became what it is today in 1893 when Domingo Ghirardellit bought the whole block to make it the home for his Ghirardelli Chocolate company.
By the 1960s, he sold the company to the Golden Grain Macaroni Company. The Golden Grain Macaroni Company decided to move Ghirardelli's company to another location and sell the square.
By that time the square had become a landmark within San Francisco. Familiar with its importance to San Francisco, William Roth and his mother bought the land in 1962.
They saved the square from being turned into an apartment complex. Then, they converted the old brick buildings into a retail and restaurant usable area.
This is the first known, large-scale re-use project within the United States. The square was finally reopened two years later in 1964.
This allowed the square to become listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. This means that people are going to try to preserve this important and popular landmark within San Francisco if anyone tries to sell or re-convert it again.
Only a few blocks away is another popular landmark known as Fisherman's Wharf. Fisherman's Wharf history as a popular location began at the beginning of San Francisco.
With the Gold Rush and immigration of the Italian fishermen, many people came to the San Francisco area. This area was known for the plentiful supply of the Dungeness Crab.
It was quickly founded as the center for San Francisco's fishing fleet. It served this purpose until the 1970s and 80s when the wharf was reconstructed into a tourist area.
However, many fishermen and their fleets still call this wharf their home. Coinciding with the origins of this wharf, many tourists enjoy the Dungeness crab at Fisherman's Wharf today.
The wharf also features many different shops, museums, and even a park. Of course, this is one of the best places to get clam chowder and sourdough bread within San Francisco.
Many of the famous restaurants located on this wharf have been owned and run by the same families for over three generations. Near this wharf there are often old ships and submarines that are available for touring.
These ships were used in the previous World Wars and have many stories. There is even a 19th century whaling ship named Balclutha that you can tour.
Fisherman's Wharf is also the center for many community events. For example, a brilliant fireworks show is held here on the Fourth of July.
The Fleet Week's Air Shows can also be seen from this location. Another famous thing about Fisherman's Wharf is the Bushman.
The Bushman is a local street performer who sits behind bushes or branches and scares people as they walk by. He has been conducting his street performance for over 30 years.
This wharf is very popular within the media world as well. This was the site used for the James Bond movie A View to a Kill in 1985.
Bond met with the CIA agent Chuck Lee on this location. At the time, James Bond was being played by Roger Moore.
In this movie, James Bond was seeking to kill Max Zorin, who was played by Christopher Walken. The best way to reach this wharf is to park in one of the parking lots off of Fisherman's Wharf and take one of the classic cable cars to this location.
These cable cars have existed since 1964 and are still used consistently by San Franciscans as a daily form of transportation. It is a unique and fun experience if you live in a city that does not feature this form of transportation.
The cable cars have been so popular that they have even become a national landmark. A visit to this wharf is an absolute must if you find yourself in San Francisco with some extra time.
