If you find yourself in Pittsburgh, Pa this summer, do yourself a favor and schedule a day at Kennywood Park. Kennywood offers enough excitement and entertainment to thrill people of all ages. Situated on 107 acres, the park first opened in 1898 and has continued to expand to this day. Your smaller children will love to spend their time in the kiddieland section of the park. This area features many rides that cater to the children who are not tall enough (or brave enough) for the thrill rides.

For the older kids and kids-at-heart there are many thrill rides including 6 roller coasters. The oldest is a classic wooden coaster launched in 1920 called The Jack Rabbit. The park also features two other wooden coasters, The Racer and The Thunderbolt. The Racer is unique in the fact that it launches two of the rides cars simultaneously. The car you are riding in is "racing" the other. The outcome of the race is determined by the ride operator and is usually alternated back and forth throughout the day. The Thunderbolt uses the rugged western Pennsylvania terrain to its advantage by dropping immediately as it leaves the station. This coaster is consistently among the most favorite rides in the park.

Kennywood also features three modern steel coasters. The Exterminator is very unique and probably unlike any other coaster you have ridden. The theme on this ride is the rider is supposed to be a rat trying to escape an exterminator. Half way through the ride the cars are allowed to spin free creating a thrilling ride. Another modern coaster is The Phantoms Revenge. When this coaster was first launched in 1991 it held world records for both longest drop (228 feet) and fastest roller coaster (82 miles per hour). The newest steel coaster to join the Kennywood family is scheduled to launch in the spring of 2010 and will be called Sky Rocket. Riders will be catapulted from zero to fifty miles per hour in three seconds.

One of the most unique attractions at the park is the Noah's Ark. Built in 1936, it is one of only two that exists in the world and the only one in the United States. Visitors get to walk through the dark hallways of the ark and navigate over vibrating floor boards and other surprises that you'll have to experience for yourself.

For 2010 Kennywood is scheduled to open in early May and operate daily until the end of September. The park opens at 10:30 A.M. and remains open until 10:00 P.M. General admission is $35.99 and for guests under 46" the price is $22.99. For seniors over the age of 55 the price is only $17.49.

Try to get a good nights sleep the night before you visit. Trust me, you'll need it!
