Visiting The Best Museums In Amsterdam

Amsterdam is one of the most popular cities in Europe and the ideal place to plan a weekend break in a city hotel

. Amsterdam is a truly historic and cultural city and there are many attractions to be found here. It boasts a huge selection of world-class museums, so, for art and history lovers, here are four of the best.

1. Rijksmuseum

The Rijksmuseum is one of the most important museums in the whole of Holland. It is located on the Museumplein, and contains an extensive collection of artworks as well as historical artefacts and crafts. The collection of paintings is impressive by any standards, and it boasts a large collection from the Dutch Golden Age. Paintings by Rembrandt, Frans Hals, Jan Steen and Jacob van Ruysdael are all on display, and there is also an extensive collection of Asian art. The museum was founded originally in The Hague in 1800, and moved to the city a few years later.

2. Van Gogh Museum

If you're museum-hopping when staying in a city hotel, Amsterdam is perhaps the best place in the world to find out about one of the most famous Dutch artists of all time, Vincent Van Gogh - because it is here that you will find the Van Gogh Museum. The museum houses the largest collection of the artists work anywhere in the world, and you will be able to explore the development of his life as well as compare his paintings with those of some of his contemporaries. For many years it has been one of the most-visited museums in the country, and it contains about 200 paintings along with hundreds of letters and drawings. Until April 2013, the museum will be located in Hermitage Amsterdam, and previously it was located at the Museumplein. Check for details beyond that date.

3. Anne Frank Museum

The wonderful and moving Anne Frank Museum is located on the Prinsengracht canal. Here, you can learn everything about the most famous diarist of all time. The museum is housed in the same building where she hid for two years to escape the Nazis. It opened in 1960 and is a very evocative place to visit, truly bringing the plight of the young girl and her family to life.

4. Rembrandt House Museum

If you're a fan of Rembrandt you may want to check out this museum during your stay in a city hotel. Amsterdam was home to Rembrant for many years, and this museum is housed in the actual building that he lived in for nearly two decades. The house is located on Jodenbreestraat, right in the centre near to the Waterlooplein, and the interior has been reconstructed to look exactly as it would have done when the artist lived here in the 17th century. There is also a large collection of his etchings on display.

These are just a few of the best museums to check out when you book your stay in a city hotel. Amsterdam is a wonderfully cultural city that makes for an ideal weekend break or longer. Make sure that you visit some of these world-class museums during your stay to find out more about the history of the city.
