Visiting The Denver Zoo

The different animal classes are all represented in this animal conservatory

. Mammals are warm-blooded animals with a backbone which share the characteristics of having hair or fur and mammary glands that produce milk to nourish their young.

The diversity of mammals ranges from tiny field mice the size of a finger nail to the massive blue whale, to human beings. Mammals occupy all continents and can live on land and in fresh or salt water.

Reptiles are cold-blooded animals with a backbone, tough skin with a covering of scales, and lungs for breathing. They cannot regulate their own body temperature, so they depend on warmth from the sun to become warm and active.

Most reptiles lay eggs, but some give live birth. Reptiles include snakes, lizards, crocodilians, turtles, and tuataras.

Amphibians are cold-blooded animals with a backbone that have moist skin without scales. They cannot regulate their own body heat so depend on heat from the sun to become warm and active.

Most lay jelly-covered eggs but some give live birth to their young. This group of animals includes newts and salamanders, frogs and toads, and worm-like caecilians.

An amphibian begins life in water breathing through gills and eventually evolves into a terrestrial adult through the process of metamorphosis. Fish were the first backboned animals to appear on earth and form the largest group of vertebrates.

Fish live in water and most breathe using gills, have a body covered with scales, are cold-blooded, have two chambered hearts, and maneuver using fins. Although not all birds can fly, their basic design and main characteristics resolve around adaptations for flight.

All birds are covered with feathers. Flight birds have partially hollow bones that are lightweight so they can soar in the sky. They have a very efficient respiratory system, hatch from eggs, have two wings, two feet, and are warm-blooded vertebrates.

Invertebrates have no bones and no cartilage. Invertebrates are found in every type of habitat but are most plentiful in the oceans.

There are more than 30 types of invertebrates in this diverse group which includes sponges, jellyfish, flatworms, squid, crabs, venomous spiders and butterflies. The largest group of invertebrates is the arthropods.

It is believed that there could be as many as 270,000 species of flowering plants found throughout the world. Denver Zoo features many native Colorado plants as well as plants that may not naturally grow in your backyard.

The Asian Tropics' expansive complex will allow visitors to explore and discover the rich history of animals in Asian culture. Visitors will be able to witness their complicated relationship with humans and the efforts of Denver Zoo and its partners around the world to protect their future.

Bear Mountain was the first naturalistic habitat of its kind in North America. Bear Mountain is currently home to grizzly bears, Asiatic black bears and the curious coati.

Predator Ridge is a large exhibit with beautifully landscaped habitats that are home to 12 African species of mammals, birds and reptiles. The exhibit totals about 50 animals including African wild dogs, lions, spotted hyenas, crowned cranes, African porcupines, banded mongoose and vulturine guinea fowl.

Visitors enter Tropical Discovery through a winding pathway past waterfalls into a darkened cave. Here they can explore a temple ruin deep in the heart of the jungle and travel along a tropical riverbank to a mangrove swamp.

This is where a variety of fresh-water and marine fish and exotic turtles can be seen swimming in the 2,250-gallon cerulean blue pool. Back on land, visitors can wander around a cypress swamp and balmy tropical marsh through the world's largest indoor Komodo dragon habitat before exiting through the Discovery Center.

The Primate Panorama is a 7-acre facility home to extremely social primates in a habitat that very closely replicates their natural environment. This habitat houses monkeys, gorillas, and apes.

Nearly 200 species, many rare and endangered, are exhibited in Denver Zoo's Bird World. Each area features naturalistic habitats and replicated tropic and aquatic ecosystems, with the majority of exhibits built without barriers so the birds can fly freely among Zoo visitors.
